OMAHA – The first Midwest Volleyball Showcase produced a few surprises and a lot of great volleyball on Saturday at Creighton’s Sokol Arena, highlighted by Skutt Catholic’s sweep of Olathe Northwest in a battle of two nationally-ranked squads.

Freeman def. Omaha Northwest 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 25-14

Freeman sophomore Kayla Haynes showed why she is one of the state’s best young players as she had 12 kills, 7 1/2 blocks and 13 digs to lead the Class C-2 Falcons over Clasa A Omaha Northwest.

Lyndsey Ehmen added 20 assists for Freeman, which also got six kills from Lauren Parde and five from Maggie Parde.

Skutt Catholic def. Olathe Northwest 25-18, 26-24, 25-16

Skutt got nine kills from sophomore Lily Heyne and eight apiece from Brooke Heyne and Megan Skovsende as the SkyHawks knocked off the #43 team in the nation in straight sets.

Nikki White had nine digs and Jessica Schlautman added eight for #15 Skutt while Allison Schomers dished out 29 assists.

Grand Island Northwest def. Millard West 25-20, 25-13, 25-19

Junior Taryn Mayfield led Grand Island Northwest with 14 kills and 3 1/2 blocks to lead the Vikings to a sweep of Millard West.

Sierra Holliday added seven kills and two blocks for the Vikings while Kelsey Placke had five kills, six ace serves and 2 1/2 blocks. Taylor Hageman contributed a team-high 27 digs and Kylie Broich had 24 assists to go with five kills.

Olathe Northwest def. Papillion-LaVista 25-23, 22-25, 28-26, 21-25, 15-10

Olathe Northwest bounced back from its loss to Skutt to defeat Papillion-LaVista in five sets.

Steph Gaston led the Monarchs with 21 kills while Sydney Fitzgibbons added 13 and Ally Glaser had 11. Chloe Paschal added three ace serves and 19 digs while Maddie Krajewski also had 19 digs. Dani Prusha finished the match with 64 assists.

Papillion-LaVista South def. Kearney Catholic 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-8

Jessica Hendrix had 10 kills and 3 1/2 blocks to help Papillion-LaVista South hold off four-time defending Class C-1 champions Kearney Catholic.

Sophie Hendrix added nine kills and Sydney Morehouse had seven blocks for the Titans while Mara LeGrand had 27 assists, 11 digs and three kills. Leah Palensky led Papio South with 26 digs.

Kylie Thiele had 22 kills and four blocks and 28 digs to lead Kearney Catholic while Anna Squires 15 kills, two blocks, 27 digs and 22 assists. Jordan Streit had 10 kills, Sarah Oldfather had 3 1/2 blocks, Ashlynn Schmaderer finished with 36 digs and Olivia Micek had 23 assists.
