In dominating fashion SMV 16-1 Black won the 2018 Frostbite Festival U16 tournament. With a perfect 9-0 record on the weekend SMV lost only one set, that coming in the championship gold bracket final match. As the top seed overall to start the event, SMV swept through their opening pool by defeating Vital 16-3 (25-21, 27-25), STMA 15-2 Gold (25-15, 25-12), and V-Hawk Xtreme 16-Silver 25-6, 25-13). Carrying that top seed into round two pool play, SMV again swept the competition by defeating Vital 15-2 Royal (25-8, 25-10), STMA 15-1 Blue (25-10, 25-21), and Iowa Heart 16U Red (25-21, 25-20).

Eight teams advanced to the championship gold bracket with over half of the teams representing the North Country Region. The quarterfinals saw SMV 16-1 Black defeat Iowa Heart 16U Black 25-15, 25-15 as Southside Juniors 16-1 and MVA 16 HP battled it out on the same side of the bracket. MVA emerged victorious with a 25-14, 25-17 win. The other side of the bracket pitted NCR teams Shakopee 16-1 and Club Krush 16-1 against one another with Shakopee taking the win 25-12, 25-19. They advanced to the semifinals to face ClubRed 16 Red of the Badger Region, a 25-22, 25-21
