Week One Wisconsin Club All Defensive Team
In week one of the 2018 club season, Prep Dig Wisconsin was able to take the first day of the 17/18s Super Open Great Lakes Power League as well as the WVA Invite in Appleton which featured some competitive matches between WVA and Black and Gold 18s from Milwaukee Sting. Week one is always a little awkward with teams still getting into their groove, but there were still some solid performances on defense that are worth noting.
Emily Scott – WVA 18 Black Class of 2018 – Middle Blocker
Committed to Louisville
When WVA seemed to be losing momentum, Emily Scott always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. She is quick to jump and get her hands up to disrupt the other middle, but is also extremely laterally quick getting from pin to pin. A couple of times she was blocking out backrow attacks where the ball was landing on the ground before the hitter was. She is a great role model for future middle blockers where even if you aren’t getting set you can still have a huge impact on the game with your feet and hands as well as reading the defense.
Paige Jaeger – Motion 18 Blu Class of 2018 – Libero
Committed to Stony Brook
Jaeger was in full command on Saturday at GLPL, holding down the backrow for Motion 18 Blu. Their pool was loaded with talent, and managed to end the weekend with two back to back wins. Jaeger’s court presence was contagious keeping Motion competitive through all matches. Her serve receive is particularly strong and will continue to provide Motion with a solid first contact this season.
Amanda Garvens – Milwaukee Sting 18 Black Class of 2018 – Libero
Committed to UNC Greensboro
Garvens and Jaeger played on the same high school team which was one of the tops in the state with Oconomowoc. Garvens could play on the pin as well, but as a libero she is strong, athletic, and will change the game by taking away what is thought to be a for sure kill. She was digging high level Division 1 recruits from WVA in Maddie Koch (Purdue commit), Emily Scott (Louisville commit), and Lily Welit (St. Louis commit). 18 Sting Black will be extremely competitive this year, their next competition is this weekend at the Girls Winter Championship in Chicago competing for a bid in the USA Division.
Cece Huhn – WVA 17 Black Class of 2019 – Middle Blocker
Committed to Northern Colorado
Huhn brings quite the physical presence from the middle. In WVA’s match against Premier it wasn’t necessarily the blocks that Huhn was able to score (which she still did plenty of that), it was the communication to her other blockers, reading the setter, and altering the shots from the attackers across the net. The block is the product of a lot of work to be done by the middle, but causing the attacker to alter a shot for an easy pass to your own side does the job as well.
Sophie Quelle – Capital 18 Adidas Class of 2018 – Libero – Uncommitted
With Green Bay libero commit, Kaitlyn Gehler, having to set for Capital 18 Adidas, that left Sophie Quelle to step up at libero. Quelle was solid, the Class of 2018 prospect out of McFarland was able to provide a solid first contact against some very powerful swings in their pool. She would be a great pick up for a school looking for a libero to come in and make an impact. Keep an eye on Quelle and her defensive play in the backrow throughout this club season.
