Three pools of four teams made up this year’s crop and the top two teams from each pool advanced to Sunday’s Gold Bracket.
Here’s a recap of each of the three pools and the teams that will make up Sunday’s tournament.
Pool A Recap: TI Elite 161 ran the table on its way to earning the top overall seed in Sunday’s tournament. The team from Indiana got its biggest challenge on Saturday from MVA 16 National Black. The two went three sets before TI Elite came away with a 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 victory. MVA still did what it needed to do to advance, dispatching Michigan 16 Elite West (25-15, 25-23) and FIVE1 VBC 16-ADIDAS (25-16, 25-17). Michigan Elite earned a 25-11, 26-24 victory over FIVE1 to place third in the pool.
Pool B Recap: Another team from Indiana grabbed this pool as Vision 16 Indy Elite went 3-0, opening its day with a hard-fought win over Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno in three sets (25-22, 15-25, 15-13). Vision followed it up with a 25-18, 25-22 win over TeamD 16-Red and a 25-23, 25-14 win over Maverick 16 Elite. It will be the second seed in Sunday’s Gold Bracket. Michigan Elite still advanced to Sunday’s tournament as well thanks to a 25-20, 25-15 win over Maverick and a 25-20, 25-14 win over TeamD.
Pool C Recap: PGH Elite 16 Elite out of Pittsburgh claimed this pool with a 3-0 record while Michigan Elite 16 Elite East finished in second place to advance to Sunday’s Gold Bracket. PGH didn’t drop a set on the day, but did get a scare from Inside Out 16 National in its opening match. After dominating the first set, 25-6, PGH had to fight for a 29-27 win in the second set. PGH also had a 25-6 first-set win over Michigan Elite, but then was pushed to a 25-22 score in the second set. Michigan Elite advanced by beating Unified 16-1 (25-21, 25-23) and Inside Out (25-18, 25-14).
