A day of competitive play have weeded out eight teams to compete in the Gold Bracket on Sunday from Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac.
Here’s a recap of each of the four pools and the teams that advanced to Sunday’s tournament.
Pool A Recap: It was FaR Out 17 Gold that managed to win all six sets it played on Saturday, including a highly-competitive match with Michigan Elite 17 Mizuno, in which FaR Out came out with 25-20 wins in both sets. A young team, featuring a number of Class of 2020 players, FaR Out 17 Gold allowed just 13.75 points over its other four sets. Michigan Elite wasn’t much worse, holding its other two opponents to just 15 points per set.
Pool B Recap: SPVB 16 Elite came way with three wins in pool play, dropping just one set to PGH Elite 17 Elite (25-22) on the day. PGH would be unable to claim the second spot and advance to the Gold Bracket as it suffered a three-set loss to Dead Frog 17 Black (23-25, 30-28, 15-6) in a tremendous battle. Dead Frog moves on to Sunday’s Gold Bracket with the victory.
Pool C Recap: Team D 17-Red managed to run the table in this pool, failing to drop a set along the way. It would be MVA 17 National Black that would give Team D it’s toughest battle at the end of pool play in a contest for first. Team D managed to hold off MVA 27-25, 25-20, but MVA finished in second and still advanced to Sunday’s Gold Bracket.
Pool D Recap: In this pool, Unified 17-1 had the perfect run, winning all six sets it competed in on Saturday. Pool play wrapped up with a battle of then-unbeatens when Unified faced Michigan Elite 17 Elite West. Unified narrowly escaped with the win in both sets, claiming the 25-23, 27-25 victory. Both teams will compete for the 17 Open Gold Bracket title on Sunday.
