I’ve mentioned this before in prior articles, but summer league is always interesting with a variety of lineups and combinations that could consist of middle blockers having to play backrow and liberos getting a chance to play in the front row. Here are a few players and combinations to note that you may not have heard about.
Green Bay Summer League:
Brooke Clement – Bay Port – Outside Hitter
Bay Port is a program on the rise, finishing their 2017 season giving Kimberly a scare in the sectional semifinal. Clement seems like she could step on any court or field and be the best athlete out there. Incredibly dynamic, Clement hits from the outside and moves really well in the backrow. She has the body language and the constant communication which really energizes the rest of the team. Even though the Pirates may have lost some key pieces from a successful team last year, they have some athletes who could do some damage in the upcoming 2018 season.

Maddie Crowley – Ashwaubenon – Outside Hitter
Maddie Koch is definitely the big name with Ashwaubenon volleyball heading to Purdue, but there is more balance for the Jaguars. Crowley has been playing for Wisconsin Volleyball Academy on their national team the past two years and will be a solid all around player. At summer league she was playing outside and was able to show an aggressive approach and swing. If Ashwaubenon is going to make a push in the FRCC they will have to show some balance and need the likes of Crowley to really come on strong which she is more than capable of putting up a big game.
Rachel Bohlman – Green Bay Southwest – Setter
Bohlman could play any position for Southwest, but her future is in setting. A solid all around player that is just under six feet tall, the soon to be Junior can score points from the service line, in the front row, and puts up a solid block.
Aubree Bucheger – Oconto – Outside/DS
Bucheger is gritty and aggressive! Cora Behnke will be one of the top outside hitters for her class in the state and the obvious go to player for Oconto, but Bucheger will be the L2 for Oconto and one of their primary passers and serve receivers. Bucheger has a future in college volleyball and could be a solid pick up for a libero/DS who will give her all and bring an aggressive and competitive demeanor to the court
De Pere High School at the Green Bay Summer LeagueDe Pere High School
De Pere has always been a solid program with a few FRCC titles and state tournament appearances earlier in the decade and will have a crew of young, athletic hitters coming up this year, Sophomores and Juniors that include Mikayla Pietrek, Kaitlyn Coisman, Avery Butrym, Briana Guerts, and Molly Hoyman will bring plenty of athleticism to the front line as the Redbirds look to get back on top of the conference and compete for sectional titles.
Appleton North Summer League:
Makenna Krause – Hortonville – Libero
Krause spent the offseason playing for WVA’s 17 Black team as their libero facing top competition throughout the club season. Solid at serve receive, anticipates well, and a reliable defender Krause will be the backbone to Hortonville’s defense with a solid frontline. Krause would be a solid pick up at the next level with plenty of high level playing experience throughout her career.
Olivia Asare – Appleton North – Middle Blocker
Don’t let Asare’s quiet demeanor fool you, she is a physical force at the net for the Lightning. Asare is able to terminate with power or can tip to the right spot, but defensively she can really put up a strong, solid block.
Kiersten Kraus – Neenah – Setter
Kraus could probably play any position on the court, but Tuesday night she was setting. Wow. Kraus looked so smooth on the court. Any time a setter can make something extremely difficult look easy is very special. The soon to be Sophomore stands at 5’10, with long arms and much like Clement from Bay Port mentioned above, could step on any court or field and be one of the top athletes. Kraus is a player that makes great things happen on the court and could play a number of positions for the Rockets this Fall.
Taylor Ironside – Kaukauna – Outside Hitter
Ironside will be looking to help the Ghosts rebuild after being a powerhouse with a state title back in 2010 and a runner up finish in 2009. An outside hitter that can play all six rotations she will be depended upon to take plenty of swings and score points anyway she can for Kaukauna.
A Trio of Defenders
Brooke Bolwerk – Setter – Appleton North
Grace Demetrician – DS/L – Appleton North
Megan Piton – DS/L – Appleton North
With the three of these athletes in the backrow it will be tough to put a ball down. Bolwerk is a setter, but has the defensive skills of any DS or libero around. Demetrician and Piton compliment each other so well and are constantly communicating on the court to their hitters. Appleton North will be at the Wisconsin Badger Team Camp this weekend and despite having to replace some key seniors from last years roster, they have a very talented team.
Payton Pearson – Right Side/Middle – Kimberly
Courtney Pearson – Outside Hitter – Kimberly
Maddy Pearson – Setter – Kimberly
For parents trying to watch one child play is stressful, but when you have three on one team that has to be a rollercoaster. Kimberly has the Pearson sisters of Payton, Courtney, and Maddy. Payton is the oldest and will be a Senior where Courtney and Maddy are triplets (their brother Logan plays football and basketball for Kimberly). Could it be a possible to have a Pearson pass, Pearson set, and Pearson kill this season?
