With major tournaments happening all over the state some teams have as many as fifteen matches under their belt while others may only have a few. It all equals out in the end, but here is what Prep Dig has come up with based on the eye test from watching these teams over the summer and into the first week of the season. This is a work in progress as teams start to play more matches and ranked teams start playing each other.
Division 1
The Joust was the definitely the highlight of the weekend with plenty top ten teams across multiple divisions coming together at Homestead High School. Neenah came out on top, but did lose one match to Westosha Central before defeating Arrowhead in the final. Waunakee blazed through the week winning the Friendship Tournament in the Dells, but also hosted Arrowhead, Germantown, Sussex Hamilton, Watertown, and West De Pere coming out of that early bird undefeated. As far as the likes of Oconomowoc, DSHA, Westosha Central, and Waukesha West flip a coin. These teams are so solid and will make plenty of noise this season. Union Grove comes in at #9 after winning the UW-Whitewater tournament with Karlee Lois being named MVP. Watertown won the Sun Prairie Tournament and their only two losses of the season are to Arrowhead and Waunakee.
Knocking On The Door: Westosha Central, Mukwonago, Appleton North, Verona, Cedarburg
*#9 Union Grove plays #6 Burlington Thursday night at Burlington
Division 2
Catholic Memorial won the Crusader Challenge, defeating Cedarburg 2-1 in the championship. They have a strong core returning from last year’s state tournament team. East Troy made quite a run at the Joust with their only losses to Neenah and Brookfield Central. Wisconsin Lutheran and Kettle Moraine Lutheran are top five contenders and will be in the same sectional as Catholic Memorial. Luxemburg-Casco and Little Chute are part of the North Eastern Conference and check in at #5 and #7. They will have multiple chances to square off against each other this season and are in the same sectional with Shawano, Appleton Xavier, and Chilton who is #10. Lake Mills comes in at #6 with their only loss to Waunakee while Mosinee is off to a 12-3 start with two of their losses coming at the Menomonie Sprawl to River Falls and Stevens Point.
Knocking On The Door: Appleton Xavier, University School of Milwaukee, Plymouth, Ellsworth, Lakeside Lutheran
Division 3
Stratford is off to a blistering start at 15-0. That’s a lot of matches in the first week of the season. They are coming off a strong season in 2017 that resulted in a state tournament appearance. Waterloo and Lake Country Lutheran are going to be strong again despite big losses to graduation. They are in the same sectional this year as well, so no state tournament match up between these two. The Menomonie Sprawl had plenty of top Division 3 teams with Colfax, Eau Claire Regis, and Grantsburg holding their own. All strong Western Wisconsin programs. Howards Grove is young, but extremely talented, Junior Emily Bruckschen will be one of the top Division 3 players to watch this season as will Cora Behnke of Oconto who is in at #5.
Knocking on the door: Aquinas, Crivitz, Oostburg, Racine Lutheran, Brodhead
Division 4
Clayton brings back experience, but also a lot of gritty talent and relentless defense. After finishing second in the Sprawl to River Falls they are rising as the early season favorite in Division 4. McDonell Central and Luck are right behind with Maggie Craker leading McDonell Central and Katie Mattson being the main go to for Luck. These teams will see more each other as the season comes. Sammie Seib is coming off a stellar Freshman year for Catholic Central who will be looking to make a push to the Resch.
Knocking on the door: River Ridge, Prentice, Hillsboro, Riverdale, Black Hawk
