Where the real drama took place was in the matches that would determine the seeding for Saturday’s tournament.
Papillion-LaVista was able to hold on for a 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 win over crosstown rival Papillion-LaVista South in Pool D, while top-seeded Skutt Catholic needed three sets to get past Millard South to win Pool A and Millard North had to rally late to beat Western Christian in Pool C, winning the third set 26-24. Meanwhile, Omaha Marian avoided any drama, winning all three of its matches in straight sets to take Pool B.
Millard North, ranked #2 in Class A, had the most thrilling match of the even in its 25-17, 23-25, 26-24 win over Western Christian from Hull, Iowa. The Mustangs found themselves down 20-22 in the third set when Emmy Grant got a kill and Allie Kerns got an ace block to tie it at 22. The Wolfpack was then called for 4-contacts when a Western Christian players’ attack hit the net and rolled along the tape as everyone waited and watched until it slid down on the Wolfpack side and contacted a player to give Millard North a 23-22 lead.
Western Christian tied it at 23 on a kill by Olivia Granstra but another kill by Grant gave Millard North match point at 24-23. Western Christian again responded and tied it at 24 on a kill by Macay Van’t Hul. Grant’s 10th kill of match made it 25-24 Millard North and Paige Holdsworth ended a long rally – and the match – when she rolled a shot over the Western Christian block and down to the floor.
Grant had a team-high 10 kills for Millard North while Kerns and Molly Plahn each had seven. Holdsworth finished with six. Emma Altman had a team-high 16 digs and Izzy Lukens finished with 30 assists.
