The two full days of volleyball included extremely competitive volleyball for athletes and teams looking forward to this coming season. Coming off of a huge win during the Prep Dig Summer League, Waukesha West was ready to go — and it showed, as they went 7-0 last weekend to win the tournament.
They played like a well oiled machine, with great teamwork all around. No one even took a set from them, though there were some great matches. Including against River Ridge in their crossover match to get to the Gold Bracket.
They then went on to face (and defeat) Stratford, Waunakee, and, finally, the Milton Red Hawks in the championship match. Varsity Coach Patti Witon was there to watch and she was impressed with how cohesive the team played together and that every single player there made a significant contribution to the teams ultimate success. Some of the Waukesha West athletes who competed this weekend were Darragh Dixon, Jenna Clouser, Abby Fregein, Alexis Boling, Anna Nerad (Committed to UW-Milwaukee), Anna Holland, Mckenna Scharnek, Lauren Bach, and Kaylee Lorincz.
All teams who competed in the gold were extremely talented, and after a run to the state tournament last year, Waunakee is looking extremely strong for the 2018 season. Waunakee’s lineup includes Kiana Schmitt, currently Prep Dig’s #1 ranked player in her class and committed to Creighton University as well as Milla Malik, Prep Dig’s #8 ranked player in the class of 2020 and committed to the University of Buffalo.
Making an impressive run was Lake Country Lutheran, Division II State Champions in 2017 placing 4th overall in the tournament. Their only losses in the two day battle were to Waunakee and Milton High Schools.
The Milton Red Hawks lost the championship in an all out battle against Waukesha West scoring 20 points in the first game and 21 in the second. This should be a strong year for the Red Hawks after winning six straight matches over the two day tournament to make it to the championship match.
The 2018 season is looking to be a good one. As these teams continue to grow and develop, there are sure to be some great matchups throughout the fall.
