No. 11 Mount Vernon’s hitters Natalie Welch, Annie Rhomberg, Rory Light, Madi Cranston, and setter/RH Ella Brase kept the Spartan’s moving at the net. Welch led Mount Vernon with 9 kills, followed by Light with 7 and Brase with 5. Brase also contributed 12 assists and 14 digs (tied with libero Jorie Randall) and setter Summer Brand added 11 assists. The Mustang’s put a lot of balls in the back third giving the Spartan’s libero Taylor Moore time to shine as she picked up balls left and right, leading her team with 21 digs. DS Hannah Kramer contributed 7 digs as well. The back row had some help from the front with lots of block touches from middle hitters Kate Benzing & Katie Yi, and RH Taylor Noonan. Outside hitter Lauren Schrock led the offense with 18 kills and outside hitter Abby Smith added 9 kills along with 9 digs. Setter Kennedy Bombei led in assists with 18 while setter/RH Rachael Nelson tallied 14 assists and 6 kills.
Both teams fought hard and stayed close throughout the first two sets. The third was a thriller with the Spartans trailing behind the Mustangs almost the entire set and leading by as much as 10 points at times. Solon had lost momentum but after a string of unforced errors by the Mustangs, came back swinging. Down 17-22, Bombei rallied her team with an ACE serve followed by a couple of assists to Smith and Nelson, bringing the score to 22-23. Remember the came back swinging part? Enter outside hitter Lauren Schrock who proceeded to score 5 kills in the next 9 points, including an earth shattering, game changing, rally the troops kill 2′ off the net!
The Spartans went on to win the set and match, completing a sweep of the Mustangs. Solon improves to 1-0 in conference and 8-3 overall. This is the 4th ranked team Solon has beat so far this season, having previously won against Clear Creek Amana, Columbus Catholic, and Waverly-Shell Rock.
