Devyn was brought up onto Ryan Wilson‘s highly coveted program three short seasons ago, brought up for her blocking capabilities before being trusted for her offense that had still yet to develop. As time went on and Gordon developed, Wilson realized she had some big potential.
“She started off her career as a block first type middle”, Wilson stated, “but has turned herself into one of the strongest offensive middles in the area.”
It’s quick to assume she has quite the block. The 6’1 middle blocker has stuffed 308 attacks so far over the course of her career. In her senior season, Gordon is averaging just over a block per set. This pacing her to place top three in Croswel-Lexington‘s program history in total blocks.
While her block has gone from strong to top notch, the same goes for the pioneer’s offense. While in her debut under Coach Wilson, she posted steady numbers for the squad. Putting down 260 kills on a .311 hitting clip to go along with 79 blocks. Her numbers would increase each year across the board. In her junior season, becoming more reliable as a hitter, she put down 367 kills and stuffed 135 attacks. Both years helping her teams to a Blue Water Area Conference Championship but falling to perennial power North Branch in the post season.
Now onto her senior season, Gordon has become a veteran for the team. Another team that had a huge graduating class, losing nine players, Devyn stepped up her game in every aspect. Starting off her career as a “block-first” player, Gordon is now playing the whole game. In Devyn’s senior season, she’d be asked for her back-row presence and is thriving in her new found role.
Coach Wilson spoke on his star athlete’s play, “I think the biggest thing Devyn has done is getting herself more prepared as an attacker before the play happens. She has greatly improved her footwork putting herself in the best position to run anything that she can run given the pass.” When asked about her new found role as a six-rotation player, “She is extremely active and never takes a single play off and she knew we were going to lean on her very heavily in all facets of the game so she has put a ton of work in to becoming an above average and reliable defensive player on top of her blocking, serving, and attacking responsibilities.”
So far in her senior season, Devyn Gordon has been the rock to this young pioneer team. Leading the squad in every statistical category except for assists and coming in second in serving. With less than two months of play left, Gordon’s racked up 297 kills on a .402 hitting clip. On top of kills, the middle blocker has stuffed 94 attacks while popping up 207 in the back court and successfully receiving 398 serves. Devyn is making her mark known in this program.
To coach Ryan Wilson, possibly one of his best to come through the gym. “As it stands Devyn will go down as one of the strongest players the program has had. (Gordon) is poised to finish top 3 in the program history as a blocker (total blocks), attacker (kills and efficiency), and server (percentage).”
“I have had a blast playing for Cros-Lex Volleyball. I got moved up for districts my freshmen year and I was just a little, inexperienced volleyball player, and now I’m a potentially all-state player that can play back row, front row, outside, middle, and can clear the net almost by my elbows.” The senior spoke on her time in the program. “The coaching staff at CLVB is so amazing, notably, my varsity coach, Ryan Wilson. He is so intelligent and has an extremely high volleyball IQ and I have learned so much from him. This program has built me into such a better person than I was the first day of my freshman year, and I am going to miss it so much.”
Devyn is currently verbally committed to row at Michigan State University.
