Region 1, located in the northwest corner of Iowa, has tremendous talent and experience at the state tournament. In 2017, four of the five 2nd place titles went to Region 1 schools.
Region 1 Finishes at the 2017 State Tournament:
- Class 1A Runner-Ups: Gehlen Catholic
- Class 2A Runner-Ups: Western Christian
- Class 3A Runner-Ups: Sioux Center
- Class 4A Runner-Ups: Sergeant Bluff-Luton
- Class 5A 3rd Place: Ankeny Centennial
Here is a look at the post-season match-ups and predictions for Region 1 all classes. The winner of each region will advance to the 2018 Iowa State Volleyball Tournament taking place November 6-9.
Class 1A
Gehlen Catholic enters the Class 1A Regional Tournament as the #1 seed, earning a first round bye. Coached by Mike Meyer, the veteran team is currently 16-3 on the season and undefeated in conference play. Expectations are high for this experienced team to come out on top of the Regional Tournament and earn a state berth. Senior, Katie Peters, leads the Jays in kills with 158 followed by fellow senior, Katelyn Langel with 137. Senior Anna Britt leads with 261 assists and junior Sydney Livermore with 237. Junior Chloe Bunkers leads the team in digs with 163. The Jays will face the winner of MMCRU and Trinity Christian on October 22nd.
The 2nd ranked team in Region 1, Akron-Westfield, is predicted to match-up against Gehlen Catholic in the Class 1A Region 1 Championship match. The Westerners are currently 10-5 on the season. Junior Kailee Tucker leads the team in kills with 147, junior Jaden Harris directs the offense with 363 assists on the season, and sophomore McKenna Henrich commands the backrow with 160 digs.

Class 2A
Western Christian enters the Class 2A Regional Tournament as the #1 seed earning them a bye for the first round. Coached by Tammi Veerbeek, the team is currently 18-5 on the season and undefeated in conference play. With impressive wins over Skutt Catholic and Unity Christian this season, the Wolfpack is expected to come out on top of the Regional Tournament and earn a state berth. Junior, Macay Van’t Hul, leads the team in kills with 175. Junior Olivia Grandstra and Tori Wynja direct the offense and have dished out 381 and 298 assists respectively. The Wolfpack will face the winner of Hartley-Melvin and Sibley-Ocheyedan on October 22nd.
West Lyon is predicted to face Western Christian in the Region 1 Class 2A Final as they occupy the #2 spot in the bracket. The Wildcats are 14-5 on the season with senior Madysn Grotewold leading the offense with 140 kills, senior Emery Martin has dished out 431 assists, and junior Jayda Kruse is leading the defense with 254 digs.

Class 3A
The #1 seed of the Class 3A Regional Tournament goes to MOC-Floyd Valley who will play Okoboji first round on October 17th. Coached by Kate Boersma, the team is currently 15-3 on the season and undefeated in conference play. The Lady Dutchmen are favored to earn a state berth this year with thrilling victories over Class 4A Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Sioux Center. Sophomore Jazlin De Haan leads the team in kills with 232. Senior Jadeyn Schutt directs the offense with 437 assists and sophomore Kiernan Groendyke is controlling the backrow with 151 digs on the season. The team will face tough competition the second round of regionals, with a probable match-up against the 2017 state runner-ups, Sioux Center.
Spirit Lake comes into 3A regionals at #2 with a 10-2 overall record. Spirit Lake will take on Esterville in the first round. The Indians are led in kills by junior Emma Loveall with 310, junior Emma Jenness is third in the state with 783 assists, and senior Payton Ahrenstorff has 436 digs.

Class 4A
The 2017 state runner-ups, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, earned the #1 spot in Region 1 with a 24-3 season record, including wins over Class 2A Western Christian and South Dakota powerhouse, Sioux Falls Christian. The Warriors have a bye the first round and will take on the winner of Denison-Schleswig and Storm Lake on October 23rd. The predicted 2018 State Championship contending team is led by Kenzie Foley in kills with 267 and Madison Harms (South Dakota commit) with 192. Leading the offense is senior Maya Schmidt with 531 assists and sophomore Mia Gamet running the show in the backrow with 200 digs.
Bishop Heelan is expected to meet the powerful Sergeant Bluff-Luton team in the Class 3A Regional Finals. A preview of this match will take place October 9th as Heelan hosts Sergeant Bluff-Luton. The Crusaders are 14-5 on the season with senior Nicole Jacobson dominating the offense with 214 season kills, sophomore Jordyn Knapp directing the offense with 304 assists, and sophomore Taylor Wilshire leading in digs with 272.

Class 5A
Ankeny Centennial is #1 going into the Region 1 5A bracket, facing Des Moines Roosevelt October 23rd. The team showcases a few of Iowa’s top recruits with senior Kenna Sauer (Mizzou commit) leading in kills with 291, senior Ari Winters (Denver commit) is second with 206, and junior Devyn Robinson (Wisconsin commit) follows with 119. Robinson missed the early part of the season competing with the USAV Girl’s Youth National Team in Honduras at the NORCECA 18U Tournament. Leading the lethal offense is senior Riley Morgan who currently 6th in the state in assists with 710 and senior Josie Magner leads the team in digs with 239. The senior-dominant team is predicted to take on Sioux City East in the Class 5A Regional Final.
Sioux City East takes the #2 spot on the Class 5A Regional bracket. The Raiders are 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the Missouri River Conference. Their offensive firepower is led by sophomore Lineya Wells with 191 kills, sophomore Chloe Kramer has dished out 404 assists, and senior Kirstin Sykes has accumulated 177 digs.
