Continue ReadingSetters have often been referred to as the “quarterback” of the team, but now it seems they must be the quarterback, the running back, the center and the wide receiver. There has been a shift from small, fast setters, to tall, athletic setters who can also attack. Teams have utilized the benefits of running a 6-2 offense by subbing out short setters for tall right sides that can block and score, but more and more teams will use their athletic setters as a primary hitter in the front.
Grand Meadow is one of these teams. With a strong program history and setters to match, this small 1A (approximate enrollment of 130 in senior high) it seems unlikely that they would be able to find the talent needed to compete in the the Southeast Conference. But they have! They have two very talented setters that contribute in more many ways. Jordyn Glynn (sr.) and Meghan Eastlee (jr.)have been quite the pair this season. Leading there team towards a winning season. They are currently 7-3 in conference with only the talented Mabel-Canton and Spring Grove ahead of them.
Last week, they narrowly lost to Spring Grove in 4 sets. Senior, Jordyn played an awesome match. She had 24 assists for the night. She was able to turn even imperfect passes into scoring opportunities for her squad. Despite not always being a setter, she has fast feet and smooth hands. She does a great job of spreading the ball and also feeding it to the appropriate players. Her work ethic is matched by the positive energy to gives to teammates and the crowd. When Glynn was not setting, Meghan helped by getting Jordyn the ball. Meghan also tallied 15 assists. We like the variety of sets they run and how fast they are able to keep the offense. It doesn’t matter whose turn it is to set, both players make great choices and the team doesn’t skip a beat. At only 5’4”, Meghan is able to make strong defensive plays and saves on passes that seem un-settable. Jordyn ended the night with 14 kills. Right-side, sophomore, Madison Hindt (soph) is also a talented right side who also contributes to the team’s assists totals.
Despite their recent loss to Spring Grove, the Grand Meadow Superlarks appear to be communicating better and are gaining momentum with each match. Their match on August 3rd, with rival Mabel Canton, did not go as well as hoped as they only scored 15, 8, and 21 losing in three straight sets. They will need Glynn to be more of an offensive threat and may need to rely on the setting of Meghan more if the teams face-off again. But with two talented setters, they look to make a strong play-off run.
