Depending on who you talk to, you may hear disputes about how sections are laid out, how coaches seed other teams, or what factors should be considered. However you feel, the results are posted and there definitely were a few surprises.
Section 1A:
East:
Kingsland #9 seed: The Knights were seemingly overlooked at the 9th seed in a competitive section. However, they will face #8 seeded team, Houston, who they easily defeated back in September but then lost when they faced them again in October. If they can beat Houston again, they will match up better with Mabel Canton (#1 seed). Coach Sam Hanley, has been elevating the level of play since he took over a few years back.
West:
Bethlemhem Academy #3 seed: This team has had it’s obstacles lately, between the dismissal of their long-time coach, and first conference loss in 20 years, these players have been through a lot this season. But don’t count them out yet. We anticipate the “third” seeded, state ranked team, will find their way back to the top!
Section 1AA
East:
St Charles #2 seed: This was a seemingly high seed for the saints who finished the season 16-17. Winona Cotter was seeded 5th and defeated St. Charles in 3 straight sets. However, some of the Saints losses were against bigger schools and it looks like this was taken into consideration.
West:
Cannon Falls #5 seed: The west side does seem to have much stronger teams this year. Take for example, Cannon Falls, who was seeded 5th in the west even though they defeated Lake City (#1 seed in East). We expect seasoned coach, Melissa Hueseth to find a way to stop Bryon’s biggest threats.
Section 2A
North & South:
It’s likely the only surprise here will come if someone is able to challenge the #1 seeds in both the North and South: Bold and WEM. Both reams have only been beat twice this season and are expected to continue their dominance.
Section 2AA
North: Of course Belle Plaine claimed the top spot, but #3 seed Glencloe Silver Lake had a strong record and will
South: Kenyon-Wanamingo earned the #1 seed in the south as well as a first round bye. Maple River (#3 seed) will likely face St. Peter (#2) in a later round with the hopes of facing KW later on!
We can’t wait to see what who comes ready for competition as some matches start as early as tonight!
