So far this season, Wisconsin has had Neenah, Arrowhead, and DSHA be ranked number one, but all that matters is who holds up that gold ball on the last day of the season. Here is a breakdown of the top ten all division rankings.
10. Cedarburg – 30-7
Cedarburg has risen to the occasion this year. This team was going to be best known through the play of their middles with Kiara Reinhardt who has committed to Creighton and Maddie Barber who has committed to Villanova. In order to have a successful game with this middles, teams need solid ball control and setting to get them the ball. Another key player in this equation is Freshman outside hitter, Aspen Jankowski. Jankowski plays solid in all six rotations and can really cut a sharp angle to score points. Cedarburg’s only losses have come to ranked teams.
9. East Troy – 22-7
East Troy has not lost to a Division 2 team all season. With tournaments like the Joust and The Sprawl and others in between there hasn’t been a whole lot of room for error in this schedule. East Troy is led by Brianna Scuric, a Northern Illinois commit on the outside, but a rising Sophomore has been Katie Winkler on the right side who has a big, heavy swing and is averaging just under four kills per set. East Troy will have a difficult section with Lakeside Lutheran, Luther Prep, Mount Horeb, and Lake Mills.
8. Oconomowoc – 25-6
Since losing to Watertown at the Sprawl, Oconomowoc has come back to beat Waukesha West and Catholic Memorial. With Tayler Alden, a Northern Iowa commit, attacking and dishing to the likes of Elle Schult, one of the top available prospects in 2019, and Freshman Maleah Howe, the Raccoons have plenty of ways to score. Not to mention their backrow has the top trio of defenders in the Class of 2020 with Caitlin Crawford going to South Carolina, Tahya Pozorski, and Ashley Sharkus. Oconomowoc will be in a loaded sectional with the likes of Watertown, Neenah, Manitowoc Lincoln, and Sheboygan North.
7. Watertown – 38-5
Statement made with an exclamation point when Watertown defeated ranked team after ranked team to take home the crown at the Sprawl in late September. The Goslings may not be too flashy or have the big time recruit, but they are full of really solid volleyball players starting with their first contact in 2019 libero Sheridan Dettman passing to the dynamic and gritty gamer Isabelle Schauer, followed most likely by a kill from Brianne Korducki. If you can serve and pass, it makes the game a whole lot easier.
6. Arrowhead – 40-6
Arrowhead played 40 matches in the month of October and this was against top level competition, thats including matches during the week against the Classic 8 conference opponents which recently results in losses to Mukwonago and Catholic Memorial. Arrowhead is full of absolute firepower with Aubrey Hamilton, a Notre Dame commit on the outside a well as another D1 recruit in Elise Schneider who is heading to Wofford. Despite some late trip ups, the athletic ability and overall talent on this team is dangerous at any time.
5. Mukwonago – 28-9
Mukwonago has lost once since the Charger Rally and that was to Burlington at the Sprawl. Senior outside hitter and Eastern Michigan recruit, Alayna Jansky was out with an injury the early part of the season and their stretch of a few losses was with her not at full strength. The Indians also have Erin Powers on the outside who is a high next level player depending on if she plays on the pin or would be a really solid libero. They most recently swept Arrowhead in conference play.
4. DSHA – 31-10
The Dashers have been consistent all year long winning big matches and claimed a title at Brookfield Central. They’ve even played some top tier competition at the Asics Challenge in Chicago. DSHA is led by Senior setter and right side Anna Myklebust who by the end of the year will have over 300 kills, 300 digs, and 300 assists. They’ve split with Arrowhead, but could see them again come sectional time!
3. Burlington – 31-4
The Demons are the defending state champions with three Division 1 players in the backrow at times with setter Kaley Blake heading to Milwaukee, Sam Naber heading to Marquette, and Senior Maddie Berezowitz going to Kentucky. “Once a Demon, Always a Demon”, Burlington has tradition of state tournament appearances and lots of hardware back home. With a solid serve and pass game they are tough to compete with on any level.
2. River Falls – 37-2
The Wildcats have taken on the mantra of “Reload” which is what they have done this year after the graduation of two all state players from last year its the next one up for River Falls. With their two losses coming to Arrowhead at the Charger Rally and Stillwater (MN) who is ranked in the top ten of Minnesota’s large class, River Falls has put together another fine season. With Maddi Kealy being the first year setter for varsity, they haven’t missed a beat. Kealy, a recent MN-Duluth commit has plenty of weapons to distribute to in Anna Wolf (Minnesota), Emily Banitt (Loyola), and Halle Olson who is also getting D1 looks. They also have an up and coming Freshman middle in Haley Graetz.
1. Waunakee – 40-3
Waunakee has three losses coming to Arrowhead in a tightly contested three set battle and then immediately right after to Sun Prairie at the Charger Rally which they very well could see again come sectional play. They also dropped a match to Wisconsin Lutheran which I previously mentioned in another article that they are really gritty with the ability to compete with top teams. Waunakee has a well balanced lineup led by Kiana Schmitt who is going to Creighton in the middle, Milla Malik going to Buffalo, but also have Kaleigh Roepke who is a top outside that is still uncommitted as is libero Sarah Malone. This team got a state tournament a year ago and will have a tough stretch right before tournament time with a match against Watertown and a tournament in Plainfield Central High School in Illinois.
