Recently Wisconsin has caught Brewer fever, and they’ve got the state pretty excited after earning a post season berth, winning game 163 (tie breaker) against the Cubs to win the National League Central, then sweeping the Rockies in 3 to win the NLDS, and now the potential berth into the World Series! All of this while going on an 11-game winning streak. So volleyball is also a sport of momentum; and let’s face it, winning streaks are fun. Let’s look at some teams that are going into the playoffs hot!
#12 – Chilton – 10-Match Win Streak
The Eastern Wisconsin Conference Champions have gotten the #3 seed in the Chilton half of Sectional 2 in the Division 2 bracket. Chilton had a 29-6 record for the season and will take on North Fond du Lac (#14) in the first round. The Tigers have not dropped a match since the Appleton East Invite on October 22nd when they lost to Ashwaubenon. If Chilton makes it through to the Regional Final and the other side of the regional plays out as it’s seeded, they will play Xavier, who they actually beat 2-0 in the Battle of the Valley back on August 21st. Chilton’s big road block to the Reich Center may come in their sectional match with Little Chute, who beat Chilton 3 times at the end of August.
#11 – East Troy – 10-Match Win Streak
East Troy dominated the Rock Valley Conference going 9-0, and with a 23-7 record, secured the #1 seed in the Whitewater half of Sectional 3 in Division 2. East Troy has been on a 10-match win streak, only dropping 1 set in that span. The Trojans will wait to play the winner between Columbus (#9) and Whitewater (#8). They have a previous win over Whitewater, but they haven’t played a match since October 9th and will have a 9-day layover. East Troy has not lost to any Division 2 team this season, so they have a very good chance to go very deep into the post season.
#10 – Grantsburg – 11-Match Win Streak
The Lakeland – West Champs did drop a tight 5-set conference match to St. Croix Falls on September 13th, but they haven’t lost a match since. With a 22-4 record, Grantsburg got a #1 seed in the Clear Lake half of Sectional 1. The Pirates will take on the winner between Cumberland (#9) and Cameron (#8), and they have previously won against Cameron at the end of August. Grantsburg could find a challenge in Sectionals if they meet up with St. Croix Falls, although the9did manage to take Falls in 4 in early October.
#9 – Watertown – 11-Match Win Streak
The Goslings may not have the most intimidating mascot, but they have been dominant lately. They are currently 39-5 and went 10-0 to win the Badger – South Conference. More impressively is the fact that they haven’t lost since The Lynn LaPorte Sprawl on September 22nd – 11 straight matches. In those 11 matches, they have only dropped 3 sets. Watertown has the number 1 seed in Sectional 4 in the Division 1 bracket. They won’t have a match until Saturday, October 20th, so they will have over a week without playing a match. Will this cool them off? Or give them some needed rest? Will it hurt or help? Watertown may be hoping to match up with Manitowoc Lutheran (#5) in the Regional Final since they have a previous 2-0 win against them in August. Slinger (#4) is another potential match-up that actually gave Watertown a loss in mid-September.
So many questions, so little time!
