With a championship on the line, both East Troy and Kettle Moraine Lutheran came out itching to go home with the state champion title. East Troy outplayed KML though and swept them for the championship match.
What set the teams apart? Not much! But East Troy was practically unstoppable. From their serve receive to their blocks and well-placed swings, they played as a cohesive unit that truly deserved the championship title.
Sophomore right side Katie Winkler (Prep Dig Rank #11) had a whopping 20 kills and had a hitting percentage of 0.500. Rarely does a right side have such an amazing impact on a game, but Katie’s energy, strong swings, and unstoppable defense made her a force to be reckoned with. She played all 6 rotations and it felt like her name was getting called over the loudspeaker every point.
Junior setter Emily Wendt had 35 assists. She had quick hands and an even quicker offense. Her consistency took her very far in this match and she was a great leader for her team. She got a touch on every ball and managed to make plays out of near-impossible balls.
Senior captain Brianna Scuric (Prep Dig Rank #13, Committed to Northern Illinois) brought an enormous amount of power to the court. She had 17 kills and played all 6 rotations for the Trojans. Between her strong leadership and powerful play, Brianna was an amazing athlete on the court tonight bringing home a state championship her senior year!
Fellow senior Mati Jakscht defended the Trojans backcourt as libero. She flew across the court and was wherever the ball was. The ball never landed without her getting a hand on it. She did an amazing job reading hitters when the block was open or not there and had some crazy digs as a result. She also provided great consistency in serve receive.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran put up quite a fight though. Even though East Troy swept the match, KML made them work for it.
Sophomore outside hitter Elle Truckenbrod hit well across the court and had an extremely competitive serve. She had 7 kills throughout the match, the second highest on her team. She played well no matter where the set was or where she was hitting.
Senior setter Carissa Egelseer could move the ball from pin to pin seemingly effortlessly. She was a great leader on the court and brought some true grit to the game.
Senior middle hitter Ari Miller (Prep Dig Rank 11, Committed to UW-Milwaukee) led the team with 10 kills. She was a clear leader for the KML team.
This was such a fun match to watch, especially from the stands where there was a great view of everything going on during the match. The fans were awesome and the volleyball was competitive. Both teams should be extremely proud of their seasons!
