Continue ReadingWith the new change in recruiting rules for 2018-2019 club season, it puts some Division 1 colleges adjusting their recruiting calendars. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend was always the big opening weekend where everyone had the green light to get out and evaluate. This year, the opening day is pushed back to President’s Day Weekend (the third weekend in February), where Division 1 coaches will be able to evaluate live. This puts a greater emphasis on video, communication with club coaches, and hosting new clinics on campus instead of going out to evaluate. With club practices in full swing starting this week, who are some athletes that were maybe affected during the rule change and could be closing in on making their decision this upcoming season.
Kali Wolf – Class of 2020 – Outside – Northern Lights – Waconia High School
Wolf recently finished her Junior year of high school and has already surpassed 1,000 kills in her career. Wolf is a powerful outside hitter, but also possesses a solid all around game where she can serve receive on a dime and play a solid middle back. She may not be on of the most violent attackers, but she has a high IQ where she can find a way to score points. Before she has her club season to focus on she will be supporting her two older sisters Jessica and Taylor who recently qualified for the NCAA Tournament for Green Bay. Taylor Wolf, a Sophomore, was named Horizon League Player of the Year.
Lauren Stenman – Class of 2020 – Setter/RS – Kokoro – North St. Paul High School
Stenman is definitely the jack of all trades where she can do a little bit of everything. Kokoro has an extremely athletic 17s team with the likes of Maddie Whittington (Stillwater – Illinois), Cianna Selbitschka (North Branch – UM-Duluth), and Emily Bannit (River Falls (WI) – UM-Duluth). One of the top teams in their age division last year, Stenman is the type who can play on the pin or could run the show as a setter. A Division 1/high D2 prospect Stenman is quite the all around pick up at the next level.
Halle Wolfe – Class of 2020 – Libero – Northern Lights – Lakeville North
Wolfe is a game changer on the the court. Constant communication, positive body language and the ability to control the tempo from the back court, Wolfe will be on the Northern Lights 17-1 team with Kali Wolf. The 17s group in the metro area this year will be extremely balanced and full of talent. Wolfe will be one of the top liberos to come out of the Class of 2020.
Kendal Kemp – Class of 2022 – Middle Blocker – MN Select – Rogers
6’5 on any roster is imposing, but Kendal Kemp is playing a year up on Select and has made tremendous gains in the past year as a middle blocker. As her game continues to develop it will be interesting to see where she will be position wise. I would not rule out her playing on either pin with her size and athletic ability. The MN Select 16-1’s team is going to be extremely athletic with a lot of upside.
Sophie Jesewitz – Class of 2021 – Outside Hitter – MN Select – Wayzata
Wayzata is shaping up to be one tough team for the 2019 high school season, but first they have plenty to prove this upcoming club season. Jesewitz is a 6’3 outside hitter that plays all the way around. Jesewitz definitely has all the physical tools to play at the Power 5 level and will be very dangerous once she fine tunes her back court play defensively and offensively. She already is quite the threat at the net with a high contact point and solid block.
Jasmine Weidemann – Class of 2021 – Setter – MN Select – Lakeville South
Weidemann led the Cougars to a 3rd place finish at the Class AAA State Tournament. A scrappy defender with hands of gold, Weidemann can disguise her sets extremely well, has great footwork, and commands the court which is what you want to see in all setters. Weidemann could also be a libero, defensive specialist, or a right side. Overall a really solid, all around player.
Ava Moes – Class of 2021 – Right Side – Northern Lights – Lakeville South
Absolute dynamite. At 6’3, Moes is such a force on the right side where its such a mismatch for the other team offensively and defensively. With her and Weidemann teaming up on the high school courts, they will be working for more to improve on their already stellar third place finish. Moes will definitely be drawing plenty of attention with her ability to terminate and block. Will be exciting to see her go up against some of the best players in the nation!
