Some players found their way onto the varsity court for playing time, and some were behind strong upperclassmen-filled lineups. There are so many players that are just coming into their own, and their playing careers are about to really take off. Here are a few freshmen that need to be on your radar. With club tournaments about to get going, it will be really fun to see what other names catch our attention and which continue to rise and lead their teams this winter.
Mckenna Wucherer – 6’2 – Outside Hitter – Brookfield Central (26-19) – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold – Committed to Minnesota
Central had quite an up and down season with big wins and surprising losses, but they were led by a young cohort. Wucherer was a solid outside for Central this past season and made huge plays all fall! She is solid in serve-receive and defense, high volleyball IQ, and places the ball anywhere she likes. Wucherer makes routine plays look easy and the tough plays look easier. She tends to draw a crowd.
Gianna Vollrath – 6’2 – Middle Blocker – Fall Creek (30-7)
When Vollrath is in the lineup, it not only gives Fall Creek firepower but opens up so many different options when they are focused on her. While Vollrath holds the block, she opens up hitters like Malerie Vining (2020 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter) who is then able to effectively hit on the pin. Vollrath is a solid blocker and controls the net. She has a great connection with her setters Caitlyn Schulz (2020 – 5’5) and Quinlyn Rubeck (2020 – 5’5).
Maleah HoweMaleah Howe – 5’9 – Outside Hitter – Oconomowoc (31-8) – Milwaukee Sting 15 Gold
Howe has speed and athleticism to make her scary effective on the pin. She was a steady pin for Oconomowoc this past fall and will be playing on the pin for Milwaukee Sting 15 Gold. Howe is extremely efficient and can contribute from either pin and finds a way to score points. Oconomowoc is loaded with defensive players, but as Howe’s backcourt game continues to develop over the club season, so will her interest from college coaches.
Natalie Ring – 6’0 – Outside Hitter – Madison Edgewood (28-20) – Capital 16 Adidas
In her freshman season, Ring had over 300 kills for Edgewood. She, along with some other youth, will be a force to reckon with in Division 2 in 2019. Ring makes scoring points look easy with natural athleticism and a high volleyball IQ.
Aspen JankowskiAspen Jankowski – 5’9 – Outside Hitter/Defensive Specialist – Cedarburg (33-8) – Milwaukee Sting 16 White
Power and finesse. Jankowski is playing up an age level this club season after she established herself on a strong Cedarburg squad by scoring a lot of points. She is also a strong defensive player and will continue to take on a bigger role with Cedarburg each year in order to make a run to the Resch.
Tatum Kebisek – 5’8 – Setter – Brookfield Central (26-19) – Milwaukee Sting 15 White
Central was rebuilding in 2018, and now with a plethora of youth, they should be an increasing threat. Kebisek communicates well with her hitters and is an established leader on the court. The more repetitions she gets and with continued training, she should be successful at the next level.
Karissa KaminskiKarissa Kaminski – 5’8 – Outside Hitter/Setter – Howards Grove (35-8) – FC Elite 15 Navy
Kaminski was an outside hitter for Howard Grove this past fall. She is explosive and has a very live arm with an efficient swing. In her first varsity season, she tallied over 300 kills and will be looked upon to build the program in 2019.
