While most of the spots are unsurprisingly held by pin hitters and middles, one defensive specialist and a libero snuck into the top ten rankings. A bit more surprising is the top two verticals logged are both freshmen. Additionally, three of the top ten verticals are held by athletes from Appleton North High School.
Collecting data such as verts can be a useful tool for coaches. The diverse group of athletes with the highest verticals at the Expo each brings an amazing amount of talent to the table. Check out the list below:
Brianna Cantrell, Outside Hitter, Appleton North, FC Elite, Class of 2022, Vert. 29.1”
Brianna logged the highest vertical at the Expo and also was one of the top overall athletes who played. She has an amazingly aggressive serve and an even more powerful swing. Not only does Brianna have a high vertical but also the talent to support it. Her level of talent at such a young age is truly amazing.
Berkley Mischler, Middle Blocker, Appleton North, FC Elite, Class of 2022, Vert. 28.5”
Despite being only a freshman in high school Berkley has quite the volleyball resume under her belt. She was on the Badger High-Performance training team and made varsity as a freshman athlete. Berkley is a smart player. The Expo was the first time I saw her play and she is definitely an athlete to keep on your radar.
Madeline Crowley, Outside Hitter/DS, Ashwaubenon, One Wisconsin, Class of 2019, Vert. 28.2”
Madeline’s ability to play well nearly anywhere on the court makes her quite the threat to opposing teams. Not only is she a great pin hitter, but she also excels in the back row, both in the middle back and on the wings. She clocked the third highest vertical in the entire Expo. Her toughness on the court and overall athleticism is an amazing asset to this senior.
Kaylee Lorincz, Outside Hitter, Waukesha West, Milwaukee Sting, Class of 2019, Vert. 28.1”
Two things that stand out about Kaylee is her great form and aggressive approach. She was a key player for Waukesha West this year. Kaylee challenges opposing blockers with her speed and vertical. She is a smart player with a fast and powerful swing.
Jordan Berglin, Outside Hitter, Pewaukee, Midwest Penguins, Class of 2021, Vert. 28”
Jordan is the type of player who you just want to watch play. She has a powerful swing and is a smart player on top of that. Coupled with a 28” vertical, this 5’9” athlete can cause some damage. She also plays defense well and is strong in transition.
Madelyn Weyda, Outside Hitter, Germantown, Milwaukee Sting, Class of 2022, Vert. 27.9”
Madelyn is the epitome of a hard-working athlete. She is gritty and never stops giving the game everything she has got. In previous years she has played on Sting White teams, but this year worked her way up to Gold. With her awesome vertical, pure athleticism, and obvious hard-working attitude, Madelyn’s name will likely not be one you forget about any time soon.
Julianna Schmidt, Middle Blocker, Brookfield Central, Royal, Class of 2021, Vert. 27.8”
Julianna came into the Expo ready to play, and she did exactly that. She is so fun to watch because she is constantly upping her game and improving. This young athlete has so much talent just waiting to be tapped into and continues to play hard every time she touches the court.
Emma Oelhafen, Outside Hitter, Xavier, One Wisconsin, Class of 2020, Vert. 27.8”
This 6’0” junior was not only an All-Conference athlete but also All-State. She is a great leader on the court and a strong 6 rotation outside. Emma is a great teammate. That coupled with her extremely fast arm swing and great vertical makes her tough to defend against and a great asset on any team.
Elle Truckenbrod, Outside Hitter, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Milwaukee Sting, Class of 2021, Vert. 27.4”
Elle is the type of pin hitter who can do it all. She has a great and consistent line shot, can find the seam in nearly any block, and tip extremely well. Elle is also strong in serve receive and is a strong 6-rotation outside.
Grace Demetrician, Libero, Appleton North, One Wisconsin, Class of 2021, Vert. 27.4”
Grace is an extremely smart player and fast on top of that. She moves quickly and reads the ball well. She gets a touch on nearly everything and reacts well opponents offense. Our only libero to touch the top 10 verticals, Grace is clearly a great athlete.
We all know that an athlete’s vertical does not necessarily mean they are a great player, but for the athletes at the Expo who had our top ten verts, this was not the case. All of them are leaders and had an impact on their respective high school teams this past fall. Each is sure to be an asset to their club teams this spring and to any teams they play on in the future.
