We also had some teams and players come out of nowhere and make some huge strides leading up to the 2018 season. Below is our 2018 Division 3 Player and Coach of the Year!
Division 3 Player of the Year – Keona Salesman (Bronson)
As usual, a very difficult decision as the other athletes mentioned below, could have easily been named player of the year. Keona took her game and maturity to another level in 2018. The end of 2017 saw Bronson win their 3rd straight state championship and Keona was very good. In November of 2018, she was unstoppable. Not only did she dominate at the net, she was very good in the back row. “Keona has become a dynamic 6-rotation player for us. She is a primary passer in all rotations and is also a viable option to attack from the back row…” said Jean LaClair, Bronson varsity volleyball coach. Bronson will get one more year with Keona and she will be depended on quite a bit in 2019 as Bronson goes for a 5th straight state championship.
Other players in consideration – Mikayla Haut (OH – SMCC), Kiera Laskey (L – Bronson), and Rylie Zimmer (MH/OH – Unionville Sebewaing)
Division 3 Coach of the Year – Trisca Beasley (Manchester)
Manchester was not even on the radar for a state championship run in 2018. Coach Trisca Beasley had Manchester a set away from a trip to Battle Creek for the first time in program history. Manchester started the Division 3 Prep Dig Rankings at #19. As the weeks progressed, Manchester slowly rose into the top 10 and coaches started to turn their heads at the small school 35 minutes southwest of Ann Arbor. In the quarterfinals, SMCC (#1 in D4 at the time) had some trouble with Manchester. Although SMCC won in 5, Manchester was the talk that night. Coach Trisca now has Manchester on the radar for 2019 and I am sure she will have her now experienced group, ready to make another run.
Division 3 coaches in consideration – , Jean LeClair (Bronson), Karen O’brien (SMCC), and Mark Witczak (Traverse City St. Francis)
