It was only a handful of years ago that VCN transitioned from being a club that only had teams for 14s and younger into a club that had teams at every age level. Because of that, VCN is just starting to produce 17s and 18s teams and those teams have the look of being among the best in the region – let alone Nebraska.
Here is a look at the 2019 VCN teams in the 18s and 17s age groups.
VCNebraska 18 Elite
This year’s VCN 18 Elite team is a who’s-who of the top players in the state. It’s a team that’s deep enough that it can roll with either a one or two setter attack and doesn’t really have a weak spot.
At the setter position, VCNebraska 18 Elite has Lincoln East senior Aleandra Lemke, a 6-foot Drake recruit as well as Northwest Missouri State recruit Alyssa Rezac of Bishop Neumann.
On the outside VCNebraska 18 Elite features a pair of Wayne State recruits in Kelsie Cada of Bishop Neumann and Elly Larson of Wahoo as well as Delaney Humm of Lincoln Pius X, who is headed to Fort Hays State. Junior Delaney Whitaker of Lincoln Southeast gives VCNebraska a very solid group of four on the outside.
The middle is a huge strength for VCNebraska 18 Elite and it might be among the best in the nation as it features Wahoo’s Kyla Swanson, an Illinois recruit, and Superior’s Kalynn Meyer, a junior Nebraska recruit.
Defensively, VCNebraska 18 Elite rolls with Nebraska recruit Emma Gabel of Lincoln Pius X and Gretna senior libero/DS Jadyn Makovicka.
VCNebraska 18 Black
There is plenty of talent at the 18s level for VCNebraska for it to produce two quality this in 2019, although only four members of the team are seniors.
Lexi Long, a senior middle from Lincoln Southeast that is committed to Dordt College, Kierra Sherlock, a senior from Wood River that can play either at a pin or in the back row, Caitlin Vancura, an OH/DS from Lincoln Pius X that is committed to Benedictine College and Gretna OH/DS Jessica Malizzi are the four seniors on the team.
The squad also features junior libero Courtney Hoff of Lincoln Southeast, Norris junior Sophie Kroeker, Heartland junior setter/RS Rhianna Wilhelm, Waverly junior defensive specialist Kila Jordon, Lincoln Southeast junior setter Taylor Little and Lincoln Southeast junior pin hitter Kaela White.
The lone sophomore on the team is Haley Sprackling.
VCNebraska 17 Elite
VCNebraska’s top 17s team might have one of the best 1-2 punches there is at the setter position in Nebraska in the age group.
Waverly junior setter Annika Evans is a Colorado State commit while Diller-Odell sophomore Addison Heidemann is an Iowa State recruit.
In the middle, VCNebraska 17 Elite has Lincoln Southwest junior Corinne Boyd and Dorchester junior Abby Plouzek.
On the pins VCNebraska 17 Elite has multi-talented Minden junior Jensen Rowse, junior Cameron Young and sophomore Elise Gilroy – both of Millard West – and Lincoln Pius X sophomore Carly Rodaway.
In the back row, it’s Sadie Emmett and Karissa Paden – both juniors from Lincoln Southeast.
