Anna’s leadership and ability to make things happen on the court were on display over the state championship weekend. Division 4 had some solid players in the mix for this award but Anna’s all around play, even as a sophomore, stood out. The scariest part about Anna and her play is that opponents can look forward to preparing for her and a solid Mendon program over the next two years.
Other’s in consideration – Gabriella Kellogg (OH – Plymouth Christian), Ella Siddal (S – Leland), and Emily Van Dyke (OH – Southfield Christian)
Division 4 Coach of the Year – Mike Van Dyke (Southfield Christian)
In 2017, Southfield Christian had a lot of talent, but lacked the experience going into the state playoffs. Fast forward to 2018 and Coach Mike Van Dyke and his Southfield Christian squad had a goal to reach Battle Creek. Southfield Christian knew that road would have to go through two-time Division 4 State Champion, Plymouth Christian. During the season, Southfield split with PCA and it would set up for the third and final meeting of the season in districts. Southfield took that match 3-0 and took the momentum all the way to the state finals where they ran into Anna Smith and the Mendon Hornets.
2019 is set up for Southfield to take a step further. With Coach Mike Van Dyke’s guidance, you could see arematch of the 2018 Division 4 state championship match.
Other’s in consideration – Heather Bowers (Mendon), Laurie Glass (Leland), and Vicky Groat (Battle Creek St. Phil)
