This weekend’s MLK Tournament in Kansas City had plenty of great volleyball. The Iowa teams represented the Region with their strong play, in part due to the high level at the setter position. These setters stood out amongst the rest:
Madison Baxter– Adrenaline- 5’9 Senior setter- Baxter, a future Drake Bulldog, was a 1st Team All-State setter this season for Cedar Rapids Jefferson. She helped lead Adrenaline to a 6th place finish in 18 Open this weekend. Baxter had over 1000 assists for the J-Hawks.
Alisa Bengen– Flight 18U- 5’8 Senior setter- Bengen, although a great attacker as well, has to be considered one of the top uncommitted setters in 2019. Bengen helped lead Janesville to another State title, while adding 357 kills to her 588 assists. Flight 18U won the 18 American Division.
Sommer Daniel– Adrenaline- 5’9 Junior rightside/setter- Though Daniel’s primary position with Adreanline is on the rightside, a top setter list would be incomplete without Daniel. Daniel is headed to the University of Utah in 2020 to set for the Utes.
Emma Drake– Ohana 17- 5’7 Junior setter- Another setter/hitter, Drake leads the Ohana offense with her spunky, fiery personality. Drake lead Woodward Granger High School this fall with 369 assists and 149 kills.
Madison Geise- IPVA 18s- 5’10 Freshman setter- The youngest player on the list, Geise is playing with older sister MaKayla and the IPVA 18s. Geise plays older than her years, and she dished out 876 assists for Roland-Story High School this season.
Sara Hansen– 6 Pack 18s- 5’9 Sophomore setter- Though just a sophomore, Hansen led her Hudson High School team with 747 assists this season, and helped 6 Pack to a third place finish this weekend.
Karenna Larson– Ohana 18- 5’6 Junior setter- Larson was a member of the State Champion Ankeny Centennial team this fall. Larson has soft hands and knows how to spread the offense.
Halia Mahi– CIA 18 Black- 5’9 Sophomore setter- Mahi, who is also a dedicated beach player, helped lead CIA to a 5th place finish this weekend.
Megan Renner– Powerplex- 6’1 Senior setter- A top setters’ list wouldn’t be complete without Purdue commit Renner. Renner, who stands out even on the talented Powerplex 18s, has a wealth of players to spread the ball to. She looks to take her talent to the loaded Big 10 next season.
Taylor Ricke– IPVA 18s- 5’8 Senior setter- Ricke, a technically sound setter with strong hands, was the quarterback for the Johnston offense this season, dishing out 761 assists. Ricke will continue her playing career at Iowa Central CC next season.
Becca Steffen– CR Surge 18s- 5’7 Senior setter- Steffen, an athletic setter from Vinton-Shellsburg High School, led her team in assists and kills this season, with 228 assists and 226 kills. She will be attending North Iowa Area CC this fall.
Allena Shimon– IPVA 17- 5’9 Junior setter- Shimon had 580 assists for the Dowling Catholic Maroons this fall. She helped IPVA to a 5th place finish this weekend.
