Continue ReadingIn the first month of the 2019 club season, Prep Dig Wisconsin was able to cover the Wisconsin Ice and Midwest Penguin Season Openers, Cadott 18s Tournament, Winter Classic, Northern Lights Qualifier, the first weekend of the Badger Region Power League, Big City Luau, and the Medford Storm 17’s Tournament. Week one is usually a little awkward with teams figuring things out, and after that, it just gets better. There were some solid performances on defense that are worth taking notice. These were some that I got to see in the first month of the 2019 club season.
Anna Becker – 2021 – 5’5 – Libero – Next Level 16 Green
Whenever Next Level seemed to be losing steam, Becker always seemed to be making big plays. She is super scrappy and goes all the way to the sideline to make sure the ball is out. Becker doesn’t know what it means to let a tip drop; it’s just not in her vocabulary. She is a great role model for future liberos embracing the belief that defense is about attitude. Becker showed a player can have a huge impact on a game by defending her line and keeping balls in play.
Anna NeradAnna Nerad – 2019 – 6’0 – Middle Blocker – Waukesha West – Motion 18 Blu
Nerad is a physical force from the middle. She does a great job communicating to her other blockers, reading the setter, and mixing up the shots. Nerad works hard in the middle causing opponents to alter their shots for an easy pass.
Brianne Korducki – 2019 – 5’11 – Middle Blocker – Watertown – Capital 18 Adidas Korducki was a leading offensive force for Watertown in the fall. She is also a defensive threat, leading her team in blocks. Now put her on a team with Kiana Schmitt (2019 – Committed To Purdue) and Matison Jakscht (2019 – Committed To UW-Milwaukee) and you have a real defensive lockdown.
Carlee Doering – 2020 – 5’11 – Middle Blocker – Kimberly – FC Elite 17 Navy
Doering could play on the pin, but as a middle she is athletic, strong, and will change the game by taking away court. She was blocking high level Division 1 players in their deep post season run this past fall. FC Elite 17 Navy will be competitive this year with their next competition this weekend at the JVA MKE Jamboree.
Emma Jaje – 2020 – Libero – Antigo – One Wisconsin Antigo 17-1
Jaje fully commands the back court for Antigo. They had a tough pool last weekend and managed to end the weekend in the semifinals in the Gold Bracket. Jaje’s court presence is contagious, keeping 1W Antigo competitive throughout all their matches. Her serve-receive is “lights out” good and always provides 1W Antigo with a solid first contact.
Rachel TravisRachel Travis – 2021 – 5’3 – Libero – Merrill – Wisconsin Ice 16 Purple
With UW-Stevens Point libero commit Kelsie Belfiori releasing the reigns of the back row, Travis will be stepping into a larger defensive role in the fall. Travis was solid in 2018 and has been able to provide a solid first contact against some very powerful swings during the first month of the club season. She would be a great pick-up for a school looking for a libero to come in and make an impact. Keep an eye on Travis and her defensive play in the backrow throughout the 2019 club season.
