Prep Dig was able to attend sessions at MVW and MN Select. If you are new to Prep Dig, we cover prep volleyball year round with high school and club on a state by state basis with writers in gyms across our five states; Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. We see hundreds of players live of all levels.
Here are some of the top performances from the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse Saturday morning. With the Molten Series being a combination of age levels, we typically don’t cover the 14s level even though we will see some 14s players, but we focus primarily on 15s-18s.
Annie Holden – Midwest United 17 Red – Libero – Class of 2021
Holden, who preps at St. Louis Park High School was extremely solid as a libero for Midwest United 17 Red, coached by Jessy Jones, former Gopher standout. A solid platform with the ability to adjust quickly and absolute nails on serve receive, Holden will be one to keep any eye on the next couple years as she progresses through the ranks of club and high school ball based on an already strong skill set of passing fundamentals.
Adisa Preston – Vital 16-1 Gold – Outside Hitter – Class of 2021
Preston was a major point scorer for Vital 16-1 Gold who went on to win their last two matches of the day after dropping their opening round. Preston has some major hops and is able to hit around the block finding the open spot. She was a great combination with setter, Shannon Murray. Preston plays her high school ball for Eden Prairie and with her athletic ability, has a huge ceiling for talent to be developed.
Cheesa Devine – Northern Lights 16-W – Middle Blocker – Class of 2021
Devine was divine out of the middle for Lights 16-W. At 6’1 with a high contact point and really solid movement along the net, she was a force offensively and defensively as 16-W went on to finish second to Eden Prairie 16-1. Devine has all the tools to be a really solid go to player throughout the season, building momentum into her Junior year at New Prague. This 16-W team is exciting to watch with a lot of energy and effort all around.
Mackenzie Vycital – Vital 16-1 Gold – Right side – Class of 2021
Another New Prague prep from the Class of 2021 brings to the court a really athletic style of play. A lefty on the right side and a really high contact point and snap, Vycital is a threat to score from all six rotations. She has the makings of a swing that is so tough to defend with top spin that she can put the ball right in the corner of the court. With Vycital on the right side, Preston on the pin, and libero Maya Biese from the Class of 2022 they can run a pretty fluid offense that can score from multiple spots.
Grace Holm and Brynn Johnson – Kokoro 16-2 – Middle Blocker – Class of 2021
Holm preps at Hill-Murray while Johnson preps at River Falls (WI) and is able to work with fellow classmate and high school setter Maddie Morrow. Holm and Johnson provide quite the 1-2 punch out of the middle for Kokoro with an impact offensively and defensively. A good knack for the game, and anticipation they are dangerous in system and put themselves in a great position to close the block. Like any offensive system, if Kokoro can pass well and run through the middles they will be a tough match up.
Annawon Phommasengkeo and Katie-Jane Klembarsky – Northern Lights 16-W – DS and Libero – Class of 2021
Phommasengkeo preps at Burnsville while Klembarsky comes from Waconia. With these two in the backrow its like having two liberos. Klembarsky was at libero Saturday and was so steady in serve receive and saved multiple points with anticipating the second ball off a dig extremely well. Phommasengkeo can provide a swing out of the backrow as well. Both are extremely scrappy, physical players and can always be depended upon to keep the point alive.
Sydney DeJarnett – Kokoro 16-2 – Right Side – Class of 2021
At 5’10, DeJarnett brings a very physical attacking style to the net and puts up a big block as well to give fits to the opposing teams pin. Whether its scoring points with her swing or block, she was able to be make her presence known in multiple ways for Kokoro 16-2 who will be competing at the Winter Classic in Milwaukee this upcoming weekend.
