WVA out of the Appleton area was in existence for 14 years, providing the Fox Valley area players a place to compete at an extremely high level. Hope Werch of Neenah who helped lead the Rockets to a state title in 2016 and is now a star at Marquette, Mariah Whalen of Wausau Newman Catholic won four state titles and is now playing at Wisconsin, Annika Gereau of Winneconne is now at Mizzou, and plenty of others who made their stamp on not only the area and state, but a 3rd place finish at AAU 16 Open in 2015 was definitely a highlight to remember at WVA.
From the Facebook post on the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy Page on September 11, 2018 states, “We are extremely excited to announce our participation in a new club venture here in northeast Wisconsin. The name of the organization is One Wisconsin Volleyball Club (1W) and will be housed primarily for the 2018-2019 season in the Sports Advantage Center in Ashwaubenon just off of Ashland Road. The club will have an ownership group headed by director Alyssa King. Day-to-day operations will continue to follow many of the benchmarks and standards set at WVA along with added administrative, training, and organizational efficiencies. While the primary practice location for the upcoming season will be in Green Bay it is 1W’s goal to secure practice space in the Appleton area as soon as possible to better serve our member families in the Valley and from further surrounding areas.”
One Wisconsin will have the satellites from Green Bay Power and Wisconsin Volleyball Academy which includes: Bay (Green Bay), Antigo, Central (Berlin), Dane (Madison Area), Dodge (Beaver Dam Area), Door County (Sturgeon Bay), Flyers (Luxemburg, Casco), Lake Effect (Plymouth), Point (Stevens Point), Southwest (Prairie du Chien), and Winneconne.
The 18s team from Bay and Dane locations have a few athletes to keep an eye on. Out of the Bay location there are some players who have committed under the WVA name that will be going to be play at Division 1 schools across the country with Gabby Murray of Xavier going to Marist (NY), Lily Welti of Middleton going to St. Louis, Cece Huhn of Plymouth heading to Northern Colorado, Makenna Krause of Hortonville heading to Creighton, and Rachel Aasby of Lourdes Academy will be playing for NCAA D3 UW-Oshkosh.
Out of the Dane County location, there is Ayona Johnson of Madison LaFollette who will be playing for NCAA Division 1, Hampton in Virginia while JoLea Woreck of Randolph will be playing for NAIA powerhouse, Dordt College out of Sioux Center, Iowa.
Here are a few prospects to keep on the radar for the 2019 club season:
Morgan Jensen – Sun Prairie – Libero – Dane Co. 18 Elite
Class of 2019
This past season was an absolute breakout year for Morgan Jensen who was a major part in Sun Prairie’s run to the state tournament. Jensen also had a big tournament at the Charger Rally to put herself on the radar. A steady and gritty libero, Jensen is able to make all the routine plays as well as the flash and flare of the diving dig that keeps her team in the game. A definite contagious energy.
Taylor Vanden BergTaylor Vanden Berg – Appleton North – Setter – Bay 18-1
Class of 2020
Vanden Berg has always played up an age group with an older birthday, but she will be a dominant force for Bay 18-1 this season. At 6’0 tall, Vanden Berg is extremely physical at the net being able to attack and a major mismatch for the outside hitter with a strong block. There will be plenty of eyes on this court with Vanden Berg and other athletes who are still available to play at the college level.
Olivia Olson – New Holstein – Setter/Pin – Bay 18-1
Class of 2019
CrowleyOlson has plenty of athleticism where she can play on the pin or can set. For WVA the past two years Olson has set, but she will swing on the pin for her high school team. Olson is still available and has not committed as to where she will continue her volleyball career. At 5’11 and extremely dynamic she would be a great addition at the next level.
Maddie Crowley – Ashwaubenon – Outside Hitter/DS – Bay 18-1
Class of 2019
One of the top players from the Prep Dig Top 250, Crowley has the skill to score points and contribute in any rotation. Reliable in serve receive, efficient and craft on the outside, and high quality character Crowley would be a great fit for a college probal next year.
Taylor Birr – Pulaski – Setter – Bay 17-1
Class of 2020
Birr may be one of the hidden gems of 2020 as a setter from Pulaski. With close to 700 assists this past high school season, Birr has the ability to run a 5-1 and be an offensive threat at the net. 17-1 will also have Claire Chier, Rachael Russo, Lauren Richards, and Megan Piton formerly of WVA to add to the mix for the 17s.
Eva Beeth Grace Perret Grace Demetrician Alyssa Koska
Bay 16-1
Many of these players have been playing together for years with Grace Perret (Green Bay Preble) and Eva Beeth (Oshkosh West) as go to players on the outside and Lauren Elliott (Kimberly) and Grace Demetrician (Appleton North) to hold down the defense. Some new additions to note would be Avery Torrey of Kaukauna who is an athletic, 6’2 middle blocker and right side and all around, six rotation outside Alyssa Koska of Bay Port.
