Q & A with future University of Utah’s Sommer Daniel
This winter, Tipton’s Sommer Daniel is playing RS with Adrenaline Volleyball Academy’s 18s, but in 2020 she’ll be focusing on the setter position at the University of Utah, who is a member of the prestigious Pac-12 volleyball conference. Sommer, an avid court and beach player, also runs Track for Tipton HS. This fall, the 5’9 Utility player, was named the 3A Player of the Year after leading Tipton all the way to the State finals, registering 500 assists, 476 kills, 341 digs, 54 aces, and 31 blocks for the season. We asked Sommer some questions regarding her volleyball background and decision to commit to the University of Utah.
Q- Can you give us a rundown of your volleyball background?
A- “I started playing volleyball when I was 7 years old and began playing club when I was 10. My parents put me in almost every sport to see what I would like but right away they knew volleyball would be my thing. I don’t remember a lot from when I was younger but I remember always having a love for this game. It has been my favorite sport since I was little and I’ve always known I wanted to play in college. I’ve worked really hard since that point and it’s gotten me to where I am today.”
Q- What has been your most meaningful experience with volleyball?
A- “My most meaningful experience- It’s hard to name just one! But the events that stand out to me are when I had lunch with (former USA libero) Stacy Sykora, when I was 11 or 12 I also got to sit down and talk with (USA Volleyball’s) Jeff Nygaard. I’ve gotten the privilege to work with (Olympic Gold Medalist) Rod Wilde on a number of occasions, who still continues to be one of my biggest idols. Volleyball has taken me from one side of the country to the other. Its meant a lot of sacrifice but a lot of great memories with my family.
Another recent experience was being named All-Tournament team captain at the state tournament. It was a huge honor to get that award even after losing in the finals to a great team. Lastly, one of the most meaningful things this sport has provided is the opportunity to be a role model for young kids. This really stood out one day when I was running track and as I took a corner I heard a little girl yell, “Mom look! There goes the Ute!” I wasn’t on the volleyball court, but at that moment I was reminded of how young kids watch everything you do – on the court or not. There are so many things that are and continue to be meaningful to me in this sport, but these are a few!”
Q- What made you choose the University of Utah for your college choice?
A- “One of the most important things for me in deciding on a college program was getting that family feel but also a competitive, business-like, environment. The first time I went to Utah that was the immediate feeling I got. The people there are a large part of what helped me decide on Utah. I connected right away with all of the coaches and players. The first time I went there I didn’t know what to expect. I had never been to Utah and hadn’t even heard much about the city or school since its so far away and not a Big 10 but rather Pac 12 program. Located right in Salt Lake City – its BEAUTIFUL! The location is amazing and it seems like there’s so much to do. It’s a very busy city with people walking, biking, running, everyone is out and about. Its a very active community, which was a big plus for me. As for academics, I have just recently narrowed down what I think I want to do, which as of right now is Interior Design.”
Q- What are you most looking forward to in college?
A- “After every visit I found myself coming back to Utah and knew that it was the place I wanted to go. I think I’m most looking forward to being coached by the amazing coaches there, along with playing with the girls. I’m beyond excited to go play for Utah!”
