This weekend there were a plethora of tournaments held throughout the state with teams hoping to battle for a championship. Every team left the court with new goals and skills to improve.
Midwest Penguins hosted single day tournaments across every age group 12-18 this weekend, and there was some great volleyball indeed! Many local teams played in the tournament and there was some great competition on each day of play.
Saturday, January 5: 15’s division
Eight teams competed in this tournament including Muskego Stars, RVA, Wisconsin Juniors, Penguins (14s), Milwaukee Rally, Sporting MKE, DePere Diggers, and Eclipse. The Midwest Penguins 14 Black team ended up winning the entire tournament, beating Muskego Stars 15s in the championship! It was a great match with the Muskego Stars offense putting a lot of pressure on the young Midwest Penguins team.
Sunday, January 6: 15’s Division
A 15’s division was also held on Sunday. RVA 15 white went undefeated and beat Midwest Penguins 15 red in the championship match. They beat Epic 15 black, Wisconsin Juniors 15 elite, Lakeshore Storm 15 white, and South Shore Slam to make it to the championship match.
Sunday, January 6: 16’s Division
The 16’s division had a Wisconsin Juniors championship with a full-on battle between their own 15-1 and 16-1 teams. The 15-1 team lost the first set but then rallied and won the second two. It is always fun to see teams from the same club meet in the championship match, and this one was no different.
Sunday, January 6: 17’s Division
The 17’s division also boasted a very competitive final with Midwest Penguins 16 black beating RVA 17 navy 25-23 and 27-25. This intense match-up was a battle of both offense and defense. Penguins Rylie Gregg had 26 kills and Lizzy Danelski hit a 0.609 with 15 kills on 23 attempts. It was an extremely successful day of volleyball for both teams!
Sunday, January 6: 18’s Division
This match had the whole gym watching as Midwest Penguins 18 black took on Milwaukee Sting 18 Silver in the championship match. The Penguins outsides, Hannah Siebert and Sophia Clinton-Ragonese had a huge impact for their team, orchestrated by setter Emma Ruckstadter. On Sting’s side, Grace Peyron put up some awesome offense and libero/ds Toria Schein made quite the impact as well. Midwest Penguins beat Sting 21-19 in the third set!
It was a great first weekend of volleyball across the state, and the Let the Season Begin tournament hosted by Midwest Penguins was no different!
