With a talented senior crop ready to take their game to the next level in a few months, here’s a look at which college programs are going to benefit the most from the state of Michigan.
Molly MirabelliMiami (Ohio) – The RedHawks have been recruiting hard in the state of Michigan over recent years. After bringing in Corinne Jemison, Sophie Riemersma and Gaby Harper in 2018, Miami stepped it up even more in 2019 by landing three of our top-15 players in the class. Outside hitter Lindsay Taylor was just named our Division 1 Player of the Year after helping lead Rockford to the D1 state championship match. Outside Hitter Allyson Severance is joining Taylor after being a do-everything Miss Volleyball finalist for North Branch this fall. Middle hitter Molly Mirabelli also is heading to Miami after a strong fall where she helped lead Traverse City St. Francis to Battle Creek. The RedHawks have things rolling for 2020 already as well, with Traverse City Central middle Maggie McCrary committed.
Jessica RobinsonMichigan – For the second consecutive year, the University of Michigan has locked up our top-ranked player. After grabbing Erin O’Leary last year, the Wolverines have signed Jessica Robinson to their 2019 recruiting class. Robinson can do it all and can jump out of the building with her 6-foot-2 frame that posts an impressive 10’4” approach. Robinson developed her all-around game over the last year to prove she can do more than just hit at the net. While she is the lone commit from the state of Michigan in the Wolverines’ class, Michigan has been adding a lot of local talent for years. Along with O’Leary, Michigan brought in Abbey Malinowski in their 2018 class and already have commitments from 2020 standouts Jess Mruzik and Kendall Murray.
Desiree BeckerNorthwestern – Like Michigan, Northwestern has just one player from the state, but it’s part of a developing pipeline. Miss Volleyball finalist Desiree Becker will be joining the Wildcats in the fall after a great season for DeWitt where she moved from middle hitter to outside. Becker will play middle for the Wildcats, using her 10’0” approach on her 6-2 frame to create a lot of chaos at the net. Becker will join Michigan natives Abryanna Cannon and Tatyana Hardwick as part of the Wildcats roster and Northwestern already has a commitment from 2020 setter Alexa Rousseau.
Maddy ChinnPurdue – The Boilermakers haven’t been terribly deep with Michigan talent, but they landed the 2018 Miss Volleyball winner in Maddy Chinn for their 2019 class. Chinn had an outstanding four-year career for Notre Dame Prep, earning a state championship and two appearances in Battle Creek in her time with the Irish. Chinn improved throughout her four years and developed into one of the best passers and servers for Notre Dame this fall. The Boilermakers do have one Michigan native on their current roster in setter Joy Chen, so perhaps we will be seeing more Michigan talent heading to West Lafayette in the future.
Ryann AllorOakland – The Grizzlies have always been a great landing place for Michigan talent and the 2019 class is no different. Oakland has signed Grand Haven middle hitter Avolyn Lepo and Rochester libero Ryann Allor to next fall’s freshmen class. Lepo is a 6’2” force at the net that can reach 7’11” and approach 9’11”. Allor is a steady athlete in the back row that faced a lot of strong hitters as part of the OAA. These two will join an Oakland squad that already has five Michigan players on the current roster. They also have a 2020 commitment in Lutheran North libero Kennedy Dolmage.
