There are perennial powers, but also clubs where you might ask, “What does your acronym stand for?”. I guess that is with any club across the country. However, there are always going to be new players from the traditional clubs to the newer clubs who are going to be up and coming prospects that college coaches need to know their names!
Johnaizjha Angel – Iowa Select 16 Mizuno – Bettendorf – Middle Blocker
Class of 2021
Angel packs quite a punch being 5’9/5’10 out of the middle. She was connecting extremely well with Annabelle Costello, Select’s setter who was on point with her “C” or “3” shoot sets (everyone has their own call for this tempo) to Angel. Angel is quick and with her ability to hit different tempos makes her tough to stop and one the defense always needs to be aware of in system.
Mazie Rubner – Iowa Rockets 16-R – Mount Vernon – Setter
Class of 2021
Rubner is so efficient from the setting position, she is extremely neutral when she receives the ball on second contact which makes it hard for the defense to read before the ball is released. She can set to either pin or run a quick temp and has great command of her offense. Rubner is also able to attack when its open, but she has quite the variety of hitters to distribute to. She will be looking to lead Mount Vernon back to the state tournament.
Kaitlyn Morgan – Iowa Select 17 Mizuno – Pleasant Valley – Right Side
Class of 2020
Morgan is strong and athletic playing on the right side where she has a big swing and a solid block. However, what you don’t always see from a right side with the height and strength of Morgan is the ability to play six rotations. Morgan is always an outlet in the backrow which adds a different dynamic to this team and another outlet to score points. She also has an effective top spin serve that has the ability to drop fast right at the ten foot line.
Avery Kroll – CIA 17 Black – Waterloo Columbus – Outside Hitter
Class of 2020
Kroll was definitely go to player on the pin for CIA this past weekend with a big swing and is also a really strong blocker. There were multiple times where it was Kroll setting the block to defend the right side and also was able to turn the block in when defending the slide which is always a tough skill for left pin hitters to master.
Corinne Meier – DBQ Sting 16s – Dubuque Hempstead – Outside Hitter
Class of 2021
Meier has a big arm on the outside for DBQ sting who finished second in pool play to Six Pack on Saturday. Meier always teams up in the high school ranks with Jada Wills, an outside hitter for Six Pack. This past season Meier had just under 300 kills as a Sophomore for Hempstead who competes in the extremely tough Mississippi Valley Conference.
Elaina Bohnet – SWI Third Degree 17s – Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln – Outside Hitter
Class of 2020
Bohnet definitely stood out as a go to player from the start for SWI and can score points in a variety of ways. An athletic outside who can handle a high volume of swings will put her in a group of athletes that college coaches would be happy to have on their team. This past season at Abe Lincoln she had over four kills per set, over 400 total, and landed on the Class 5A All State team. Lincoln always has a strong program and will return all of their attackers from last year and will be looking to be a state tournament contender in Iowa’s largest class.
Emmersyn Wedgbury – CIA 16 Black – Cedar Falls – Libero
Class of 2021
Wedgbury has established herself as the quarterback of the defense for CIA 16 Black. A solid all around player, with also a background in beach provides for some solid ball control and a high IQ for CIA 16 Black.
Sam Hoover – CIS 17M – Norwalk – Middle Blocker
Class of 2020
At 6’3, Hoover is still relatively new to high level volleyball. A middle blocker for CIS, she has a huge upside and a high reach who can really make an impact forcing the offense to adjust their shot allowing CIS to run their offense in system. CIS 17s really have a balanced attack where they recently ran a 3 middle system this weekend.
Grace Evans – Iowa PowerPlex 16U Elite Black – Middle Blocker
Class of 2021
Evans brings a physical presence to the net for PowerPlex. With the ability to get from pin to pin and well as put the hammer down offensively she has the ability to draw the defense to her allowing her pins the chance for one on one opportunities. She plays with a definite fire and spark!
Sara Klunder – Six Pack 17-1 – Hudson – Right Side
Class of 2020
Klunder may not be option number one for Six Pack offensively, but she played her role perfectly this weekend, especially going up against two of the top outside hitters in the Class of 2020 in Aliyah Carter and Kacia Brown of EIX. Klunder had the job to set the block and take away some options. Not only do blockers in this situation have to get their hands up, but to make sure they can turn the block into the court so the outside hitters can’t use them to tool the block. Kudos to Klunder on being an “X Factor” for her team on Sunday.
