Continue ReadingThe Class of 2021 is loaded in the state of Iowa with players who have already committed to their college at the next level, but there are also plenty of athletes who will be a great pick up at the next level still going through their recruiting process. One of the biggest gains in volleyball skill is between the 15s and 16s year with more experience playing at a high level in high school and club and more athletes just getting more comfortable in their position. Middles may turn into outsides, outsides into liberos, and setters who start to really take command of the court. Here are some of the top pin players who will be at the Iowa Regionals this weekend in the 16s division.
Martha Pace – West Liberty – Iowa Rockets 16 R
So hard to avoid a pun here, but Pace really does put quite a bit of pace on the ball for Iowa Rockets. A ferocious approach and a high contact point, Pace plays with aggressiveness that teammates enjoy playing with. Pace can also swing on either pin and can put up a really solid block at 6’1. Keep tabs on West Liberty High School with Pace in the Class of 2021 and Macy Daufeldt who is another top prospect in the Class of 2022.
@MagillEve of Xavier was so tough to defend. Pella was getting touches, but way too much swing from a heavy swing. I know players like her hear, “You’re going to be so good”. You know what? She already is.

Eve Magill – Cedar Rapids Xavier – Six Pack 16-1
Magill stands at 6’5 and has already made her verbal commitment to play at Creighton following high school. Obviously the size of Magill puts her above the block, but she is highly skilled with a variety of shots. She was a key cog in Xavier’s run to a state runner-up finish earning all tournament team and all state honors. With her contact point its just different to defend with her speed and angle she is hitting from. Defenders may get a touch, but rarely will they be able to keep the ball in system.
Saari Kuehl – Gladbrook-Reinbeck – CIA 16 Black
Kuehl is definitely a go to player for CIA 16 Black, just like she was for GR this past fall, being a major key to the Rebels state tournament appearance. A 1st Team All State player, Kuehl has quite the fast arm swing where she can swing and score in all six rotations. In order for CIA to make a run this weekend, Kuehl will be relied on heavily and use a variety of shots as well as the block to take over a match, which she definitely has the capability of doing so.
Morgan Middleton – Clarion-Goldfield-Dows – Six Pack 16-1
Danielle Johnson – Osage – Six Pack 16-1
Setter, Jasmine Yamilkoski definitely has plenty of options to go to. Yamilkoski, who comes from Xavier High School, can run the middle well in transition to Ashlynn Kuhn and get the ball in position for her hitters to terminate on either pin. Besides Magill, two of those pins are Danielle Johnson and Morgan Middleton who both were major parts of leading their high school teams to the state tournament. Both are long and extremely athletic which allows them to play six rotations and also be a force at the net not only offensively, but defensively.

Alysen Dexter – Des Moines Christian – Ohana 16 Regional
Dexter, a 5’11 Sophomore out of Des Moines Christian is definitely climbing up the radar of outside hitters to keep an eye on out of the Class of 2021. This past high school season, she averaged nearly three kills per game for a team that was 25-8. She is bound to continue her success as she transitions into being an upperclassmen. A six rotation player who has high performance experience, Dexter can really crank and score points with power or finesse on all parts of the court.
Elyse Winter – Cedar Rapids Kennedy – Iowa Rockets 16 R
Up and coming for Iowa Rockets, Elyse Winter is on the rise on the pin she is long and athletic with great potential. Rockets will be coming in as the two seed behind Six Pack and in order to compete with the size and skill of Six Pack, they will be looking for a big time performances from the likes of Winter.
Emma Schubert – Davenport Assumption – Iowa Select 16 Mizuno
The teams who make the state tournament have a lot of skill, a little bit of luck, and a whole lot of talent that can can step up in the big moments. Schubert was a six rotation outside hitter for Davenport Assumption who was a state tournament qualifier. Schubert had a double-double in the quarterfinals with 13 kills and 11 digs. Iowa Select 16 Mizuno has the four seed, but will be a major factor to contend with. As for Emma Schubert, she isn’t the only Schubert teams have to recognize, there is also Ava Schubert who is from the Class of 2023 play on Iowa Select 16 Mizuno.
Others To Note:
Faith DeRonde – CIS 16 M – DeRonde is a high powered outside from CIS, who is a very athletic all around team. However, DeRonde is only a Freshman from the Class of 2022

Lauren Schrock – Six Pack 17-1 – Schrock is an Iowa commit and a powerful pin hitter who can play on either side. She is from the Class of 2021 and playing up on the 17s team for Six Pack.
