Teams from Nebraska featuring some of the top freshmen in the state put that on full display last weekend in Denver at the Colorado Crossroads USAV Qualifier. Nebraska teams came home with four top-10 finishes in the three different divisions within the 15s age group, including Premier 15 Gold winning the title in the 15 Open division.
Premier 15 Gold, which already had a sizable feather in its cap after winning the 15s title at the Triple Crown NIT in Kansas City last month, added another golden ball to its season in impressive fashion in Denver.
After breezing through its first five matches of the tournament, Premier 15 Gold hit its only speed bump at the end of Day 2 when it suffered a three-set loss to Northern Lights 151 in pool play. However, Premier 15 Gold wound up placing first in the pool based on tie breakers to advance to the Championship Pools on Monday.
A total of eight teams made the Championship Pools in 15 Open, with the winner of each four-team pool playing for the title. Premier 15 Gold won all three of its Championship Pool matches in straight sets to advance to the finals against Dynasty 15 Black of Kansas City.
In the final, Premier 15 Gold bounced back from an early hole to take a 15-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory. Along with the title, Premier 15 Gold also punched its ticket to the Open division of the USAV National Championships.
In the USA division in Denver, Premier 15 Black joined its club mates in earning a trip to nationals by placing second. Premier 15 Black clinched its bid with a 31‑29, 26‑24 win over Oklahoma Charge in the semifinals before falling to Attack 15 Black of Texas 25-15, 25-18 in the championship. Attack 15 Black didn’t drop a single set in 11 matches in the tournament.
In the 15 American division, Nebraska Elite 15 Fiji reached the championship quarterfinals before finishing in a tie for 5th place while Premier 15 Red finished in a tie for 9th place in the division.
The age 16-18 divisions of the Colorado Crossroads will take place this weekend in Denver.
