In what was likely the best showing for the state of Nebraska at a USAV Qualifier in the past five years, a total of nine teams from the state had top-10 finishes in the USA and American Divisions of the 16s, 17s and 18s age divisions.
Nebraska Elite 18 Yang had the best showing as a team, finishing second in the 18 American division. Meanwhile, Premier produced four of those top-10 finishes on their own.
In 18 American, Nebraska Elite 18 Yang was dealing with a wide variety of emotions as its head coach – Steve Bymers – was forced to leave the tournament to return to his home during the flooding. His home was severely damaged in the floods and his daughter – former Midland player Jordan Bymers – was alone at the home at the time the massive flooding started and she and the family’s pets had to be rescued from the residence.
Meanwhile, back in Denver, Bymers’ team was cruising through the competition and went 5-1 in pool play the first days – with its only loss coming to Nebraska ONE 18 Power 18-25, 25-16, 15-13.
Once into the championship bracket, Elite swept its first two opponents without and trouble and then dominated ICT Mavs 18 Blue in the semifinals 25-17, 25-9.
In the championship match against Adidas NW Juniors 18 Matt, the match was evenly played throughout in both sets, but the team from Oregon – which lost just one set the entire tournament – prevailed for a 25-22, 25-22 victory.
Also in 18 American, Omaha Volleyball Club 18s and NEBVC 18’s Nebraska each tied for ninth place after making the championship bracket.
In 18 USA, VCNebraska 18 Black got fourth place while Premier 18 Black tied for fifth place and Nebraska ONE 18 Titanium finished in a tie for ninth place.
Premier’s 17 Black team finished in a tie for ninth place in 17 American and its 17 Red team also tied for ninth in the 17 American division. Premier 16 Black finished fourth in 16 USA.
