Most recently, as a member of the Varsity team that defeated rival, Lakeville North. And while you may already know classmate Jasmine Weidemann, who was the primary setter during their state tournament run, Starkey was an valuable asset to the team throughout the tournament and regular season.
Her club team is the very successful MN Select 16-1. This team allows her to demonstrate why she would make a great college athlete. Of course it always helps having huge hitters like Skylar Gray: 5’10” from Maple Grove- U of M commit, Sophie Jesewitz: 6’3” from Wayzata, and Kendal Kemp: 6’6” from Rogers. Likewise, it brings pressure. This team has generated so much hype at every tournament and one of the things I have been most impressed with is Teagan’s calm, composure. Scouts and spectators gather to see the stature of this team. People want to see the hitters put on a show. And Teagan does just that, running a well distributed offense. Her and high school teammate Jasmine Weidemann share setting duties during the club season too. Both have wonderful hands and natural athletic ability. They don’t skip a beat when the other is out.
Her specialties include: jump setting quicks in the middle, protecting the right back corner with her long reach, and her back sets. Watching her highlight tapes on HUDL isn’t the same as seeing her throw a set back behind her from the middle of the court. Back-setting has become such an essential part of college volleyball and to see a 16 year old with such precise back-set is impressive. It helps to really utilize all hitters and gives a variety for their big middle hitters. Not only that, but her back-set is very hard for defenses to read.
She is currently ranked 26th in our database and I anticipate that number to rise as she gets more opportunities to flash her setting style.
