Many of the teams challenged themselves by playing in an older division; for example, several 16’s teams playing against 17’s teams. Here are 10 standout players from the weekend: some who finished in the top three and other individuals who had standout performances who you may not have heard of yet:
Anna Rolley – Shakopee 17-1 : This team, made of many of the players who participated in the state tournament was able to to stop some of the weekend’s biggest due to the strong blocking of Rolley. At 6’2″, this right side provides her team with an intimidating wall on defense.
Maddie Fratzke – Shakopee 17-1 : Fratzke is a high-flying outside hitter, with an incredibly fast arm-swing. It is fun to watch her get lots of playing time as a key component of this champion team. At 5’7” she uses her 29 inch vertical to soar above the block. Take a peek at her HUDL to see her in action here.
Julianna Boyum – KW Club 17-1 : Boyum is a strong middle with lots of varsity experience at Kenyon Wanamingo High School. She helped lead her seemingly young team to a 5th place finish. Highlights include a first round match against Kandi Elite in which they nearly caused a third set losing 25-15, and 26-24.
Alexis Pew – KEVC 17-1 : From Morris, Minnesota, Pew is a long, lean player who can play both middle or outside. Her best shot comes on a fast 3-ball that she and her setter have mastered.
Sydney Sommers – KEVC 17-1 : This dual sport athlete not only had an outstanding performance at the Odd Cup as an outside hitter, but also competed at the state basketball tournament with her high school – Redwood. The same is true for setter Makayla Snow from BOLD.
Kalleigh Carr – SWMNVB 17-1 : As a DS/Libero, your efforts can often be overlooked, but the energy that Carr brings to the court hard to miss. Her serve receive passing creates the powerful offense for SWMNVB. Keep an eye out for this game changer at Russell – Tyler Ruthton High school.
Hannah LaBonte – SMV 16-1 : LaBonte catches our eye for her tough serving and defense. A consistent player, able to take teams out of system with her strong serves. LaBonte also was a young talent for the Lake City Tigers this past fall.
Ava Jolie Brunn – SMV 16-2: Although their team didn’t finish as high as they may have hoped, or beat their club’s top team, Brunn was one of the most versatile players at the tournament this weekend. Her physicality outmatches most of her opponents. Her jumping abilities, soft-setting, and top spin serve helped her team fight for every point.
Allison Schumacher – LA Diggers 17 Purple: This right side hitter from Lewiston Altura has great potential. She was game changer for her team that finished 10th overall proving this small school team had a lot of grit.
