Setters and Middle Hitters are usually the first to be recruited since they are a more specialized position and the number of elite players in those positions are limited. I wanted to look back and highlight some of the best setters I’ve seen so far this club season.
Avery Torrey – 2021 – 6’2 – Kaukauna – One Wisconsin 16-1
It’s not hard to notice the impact Torrey has on the 1W squad. You can see Torrey really stand out with her smooth movement across the court in every rotation. Torrey’s versatility could be a huge pick-up for a college program.
Brooke BolwerkBrooke Bolwerk – 2021 – 5’6 – Appleton North – FC Elite 16 Navy
Bolwerk has been working her way onto college radars and up the setter ranks over the last year. She is undersized but really strong in her setting skill set as well as solid on defense. Bolwerk is definitely getting some great experience with a top-notch squad this club season.
Brooke Mosher – 2021 – 6’0 – Waterloo – FC Elite 18 Navy – Committed To Illinois
Mosher hasn’t lost a beat after older sister, Claire Mosher moved on to Marquette. She is a highly sought-after setter even as a sophomore. Mosher has a high volleyball IQ and aggressive style of play. She can really do everything while running a 5-1 with FC Elite.
Elise Gillen – 2022 – Slinger – Wisconsin Premier 15 Teal
Gillen is making herself known with every successful finish Teal has. She is super quick on defense and frustrating for teams that like to gun for the setter on defense. Gillen currently has Premier playing like a top club team in the region. She has nice soft hands, a quick release, is smooth-moving and a smart distributor. And she just keeps getting better!
Emme Bullis – 2021 – 5’11 – Whitewater – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold – Committed To Minnesota
A 5’11 setter with this kind of volleyball IQ is a huge find and Minnesota found it early! Bullis is a tremendous talent that is not only fundamentally sound but also getting better each time I see her play. The future Gopher is a stellar asset for Sting and has a great opportunity to work with her future college teammate, McKenna Wucherer (2022 – 6’1 – Outside Hitter – Brookfield Central).
Kaley BlakeKaley Blake – 2020 – 5’8 – Burlington – Milwaukee Sting 17 Gold – Committed To UW-Milwaukee
Blake turns every team she plays on into gold. This past fall, Blake led Burlington to a 2nd straight State Championship. This club season, Blake is leading Sting to be one of the top 17 s teams in the nation. I have no doubt when Blake and Rylie Vaughn team up at Milwaukee they will turn some serious heads.
Karlee Lois – 2020 – 5’8 – Union Grove – Wisconsin Juniors 17-1 – Committed To Wheeling Jesuit
Lois ran a solid Union Grove offense this fall, leading the Broncos to a 30-14 record. Now she runs a dynamic attack for Wisconsin Juniors, and Lois and gets to showcase her talents against the top players in the state and as the season goes on, she will see more national competition. This is one future Cardinal that can do it all!
Kiersten KrausKiersten Kraus – 2021 – 5’10 – Neenah – FC Elite 16 Navy
Kraus is a solid setter that showed her all-around talent this past fall playing 6 rotations for Neenah as a sophomore. She is a very versatile player that is a real asset for FC Elite. Elite has its fair share of pin hitters, so Kraus gets to focus on setting and defense but sometimes she gets to show off her swing.
Lilly Lutz – 5’4 – 2021 – Whitnall – Milwaukee Sting 15 Gold
Lutz plays with the knowledge and confidence of an older player. She was a shining star for Whitnall HS and hopefully she can lead them to another winning season in 2019. Lutz competes with a solid Sting 15 Gold squad and runs a smooth offense. Lutz is a big talent in a small package.
Morgan Yenter – 2021 – 6’0 – Oshkosh West – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Yenter may be uncommitted, but I can’t imagine that will last long. She has earned some attention this club season as she continues to improve with Sting. Yenter is a stellar talent as a lefty that can also pound the ball.
Grace GillesOthers to note:
Brianna Merkel – 2019 – 5’11 – Frankland – Milwaukee Sting 18 Black – Committed To Arkansas Tech
Grace Gilles – 2019 – 5’6 – Regis – Wisconsin Ice 18 National – Committed To Sioux Falls
Kelly Page – 2021 – 5’4 – Merrill – Wisconsin Ice 16 Purple
Megan Adams – 2019 – 5’7 – Stoughton – Wisconsin Performance 18UA
Rachel Rossing – 2023 – Lake Country Lutheran – Milwaukee Sting 14 Black
