This fall, a number of freshmen stepped up on the outside for various programs and are continuing to blossom during the club year. Here’s a look at 10 outsides that should be making a name for themselves over the years to come.
- Maradith O’Gorman, Lakewood/FaR Out: O’Gorman was the lone freshmen in the state to earn First Team All-State honors, grabbing them in Division 2 as she helped Lakewood to the state semifinals. Lakewood has to be ecstatic about its future behind Maradith O’Gorman and her sophomore sister, Aubrey. The two are very impactful at the net and both committed to Michigan State for their college careers. This fall, Maradith tallied 477 kills, 431 assists, 320 digs, 128 blocks and 99 aces. She has the ability to play all over the front row and is playing outside for FaR Out 16 Black currently.
- Ava Brizard, Marian/Michigan Elite: Brizard is going to be one to keep an eye on for years to come in a talented Catholic League. She was a big contributor for the Mustangs, picking up over 400 kills and 400 digs as a freshman, which earned her Honorable Mention All-State honors in Division 1. Now competing for 15 Mizuno, Brizard continues to develop her swings and all-around game.
- Ellie Toney, Corunna: Corunna powered its way to the D2 state semifinals this fall thanks to their hitting ability. Toney was a great compliment to the state’s hitting leader, Elizabeth Norris. Toney had 316 kills with 436 digs and 92 aces during her freshman season. Also a standout basketball player, Toney is a true all-around talent.
- Braelyn Berry, Morley Stanwood/Inside Out: Berry put up over 230 kills and 400 digs in her freshman campaign while approaching 85 aces. She earned Third Team All-State honors in Division 3 and is certainly to be a name to remember for upcoming seasons. Berry currently competes for 18 Gold, where she gets to regularly play against older talent.
- Tatum Casper, OH, Marian/Legacy: Another piece to the strong freshmen class that Marian had this fall, Casper had 153 kills with 63 aces and 39 blocks in 2018. Casper was an AAU All-American at 14 Open during the 2018 club season and is now a great piece for 15-Elite this club year.
- Sydney Tomlak, Stoney Creek/Legacy: Stoney Creek coach Ross Talbott was always excited to talk about Tomlak, his promising freshman star. She easily caught your attention on the court and helped lead the Cougars to an OAA Red championship this fall. Tomlak had 219 kills with 244 digs, 40 blocks and 34 aces. Things will continue to get better from there for Tomlak, who is part of 15-Elite at Legacy.
- Brooke Dzwik, Battle Creek St. Philip/FaR Out: Always a contender in Division 4, St. Philip should continue to have a great foundation for years to come behind Dzwik. She had over 340 kills and 185 digs this fall while earning Second Team All-State honors in D4. Dzwik continues to sharpen her game with FaR Out 15 Black this club season.
- Audrey Brown, Birmingham Seaholm/Legacy: The Maples got a lot out of Brown this fall, as she put up 340 kills and 220 digs in a competitive OAA Red conference. She gives Seaholm reasons to be optimistic about future seasons and is having a strong club season with 15-Elite.
- Kimani Johnson, Cass Tech/Michigan Elite: An impressive 6-2 talent, Johnson helped Cass Tech win a district championship this fall and was able to play right side and outside. Her play for 15 Mizuno in the club year is proving she is a strong prospect to keep an eye on.
- Seiler Hruska, OH, Marquette: The top half of the state got to see a rising star this fall in Hruska, who proved to be a reliable six-rotation player for Marquette. Hruska recorded 370 kills with 255 digs and 57 aces during her first season.
Others to note: Taylor Humphrey, Jada Divita, Ellia Sechrist, Sophia Treder
