As a coach, I love the players that can play any position and embrace it because they simply love to play! That player is one of the best a coach can have in their line-up. The all-around athlete is competitive, gritty, a workhorse, and they know every position. These players are the first to be servant leaders as they will do whatever it takes and play any position to help their team win. Here are some of the top versatile athletes I saw at the JVA World Challenge last weekend.
Amanda VielAmanda Viel – 2021 – Libero – Burlington – Milwaukee Sting 16 Black
Viel is another fun player to watch and it’s easy to see that she is an amazing athlete. She is smart, fast, and reads the ball well to pick up tips or dig the hard line swing. Viel has a strong serve and great anticipation to get to the second ball after a setter dig or pass gone off the mark.
Brooke Mosher – 2021 – FC Elite 18 Navy – Committed to Illinois
This 6’0” setter may be the youngest on the court, but she runs the court with great maturity. Mosher is a highly competitive athlete that shows it in the great hustle to save an off pass or dig. She moves the ball around and has no issue setting from pin to pin. Mosher digs the hard driven hit down the line and puts up a strong block. She is smart with her freeball placement and 2nd ball attack.
Isabella Bratzke – 2021 – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Indian Trail – Milwaukee Sting 16 Black
Bratzke may easily be one of the most under rated outside hitters in the class of 2021. Her speed and pure athleticism shows through when she swings and can skillfully use the opponent’s block. Bratzke is strong in serve receive and has a high reach with a fast-hard swing and a pounding line kill.
Lizzie Binder – 2021 – 6’2 – Pin Hitter – Sheboygan North – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Mariah GrunzeBinder is a fun player to watch because you can see her working hard and having a blast at the same time. She excels in nearly every rotation on the court. Binder can play on either pin and is solid in serve receive. In the front row, she shows her range with a cross body shot and smart tips. Binder plays strong off-blocker defense, puts up a big strong block, and has a serve that stresses out the opponent.
Mariah Grunze – 2021 – 6’0 – Outside Hitter – Waterford – Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
This six-rotation outside hitter can bring the heat with a high contact, fast swing, and smart cut shot. Grunze is solid in the middle back playing defense and getting balls hit off the block. She is a steady constant for Sting and clearly a go-to hitter.
