Continue ReadingThe Motor City Madness Showcase powered by Prep Dig brought in some of the best players in the state who were able to show off their skills to kickoff the Mizuno Motor City Madness weekend. Athletes were categorized by their graduating class represented by a specific shirt color and also a number where we could see their information from what club and high school they are from. While covering this event, it was exciting for me to see new players and not know what club or high school they were apart of. In the group from Friday, it was deep with talented liberos who really showed their athleticism and how they can make an impact as the commander of defense. Whether its their quickness, ability to read, or serve receive – an effective libero needs to have the total package. Here are some of the standouts from Friday night’s Motor City Madness Showcase.
Samantha Schaub – Traverse City West – North Shore 16 Gold – Class of 2021
Schaub was a libero on the move, literally. With a really scrappy style and quickness that ability stood out among the rest, not only if she quick, but efficient with her movement to beat the ball to the spot.
Carly Rodman – Rochester High – Unified 17-1 – Class of 2020
Rodman was one of the libero leaders from the Class of 2020, with a consistent platform that guaranteed the ball going to the spot she was intending, she also had really consistent play all around from taking pace off the ball to serve receive.
Livy Kowalkowski – Notre Dame Prep – MiElite – Class of 2021
Kwiatkowski may not be very big, but she still has plenty of range in the backrow. The drills liberos went through were fast paced and Kwiatkowski stood out with her ability to talk, pass, and be on point while also being under control.
Jessica Mondragon – Northville High School – MiElite – Class of 2022
Mondragon was definitely a libero who was extremely detailed from the angle of her platform to where the ball landed and at what tempo. Mondragon consistently looked the ball into her platform, holding her platform out until the next contact which is just an example of being disciplined and well trained – she’s only a Freshman.
Josie Bloom – Notre Dame Prep – Legacy 15 Elite – Class of 2022
The Class of 2022 continued to impress at the Motor City Madness Showcase with a handful of liberos showing really advanced skill being at the start of their high school career. Bloom really stood out with her ability to serve receive. In a Showcase setting, serve receive can be tough with players that you aren’t accustomed to being with, but for Bloom – she was nails with the pass spot on.
Julia Blaney – Saline High School – Legacy 16 Elite – class of 2021
Really good defenders make playing the position look easy. With Blaney, she was smooth and her movement looked effortless getting to the ball which shows her ability to read, react, and have an awareness of her platform.
