MN Select 16-2 was a big time homerun for Minnesota clubs as they took home the 16 USA title this past weekend at the Northern Lights Qualifier. MN Select 16-2 wasn’t the only top ten finisher in their club, 17-2 placed 3rd in 17 USA, and 17-3 a tie for 9th in American.
The 16-2 squad has had a strong all around season, but taking a title at the Mizuno Northern Lights Qualifier is definitely one that is the top tournaments in the country, the final qualifier of the season. A win gives them a qualifying bid to Indianapolis for USAV Nationals, but clubs have the option to decline which MN Select will do, and opt to go to AAU Nationals in Orlando in June.

Player To Know:
Olivia Carel – MN Select 16-2 – STMA – Outside Hitter
Carel has always been a key component of the offensive firepower of Select. A pin hitter with an extremely strong arm she can find the open spot on the court or use the block to her advantage to score points in a hurry.
Brynn Smith – MN Select 16-2 – Totino-Grace – Libero
Just solid. Smith provides a lot of consistency and athleticism in the backrow to keep the offense in sync. Having a steady force back there gives any team a huge advantage it can change the game. Smith is definitely the type of libero who will always keep Select in a match especially with her handling the ball.
Megan Liu – MN Select 16-2 – Maple Grove – Setter
So smooth with how she can get to the ball and put up a hittable ball. Great hands and feet allows Liu to be in great position to do her job. There are times when setters can be a little out of control and try and do too much, but Liu, like the rest of her team, is really solid and consistent where they know she will get to the ball and put it up for them to terminate.
Nicole Odeen of MN Select
Nicole Odeen – MN Select 17-2 – Buffalo – Setter
Odeen was really clicking with her hitters this past weekend enroute to a 3rd place finish. The 5’8 setter out of Buffalo is solid all around, being in great defensive position and transitioning to the net where she is able to adjust quickly and put up a great ball.
Yaiza Franco – MN Select 17-2 – North St. Paul – Middle Blocker
Franco had a huge weekend where she was dominate offensively and defensively. At 6’2, Franco moves extremely well and is a major point scorer. She is a major sleeper for college coaches who would land a true diamond here with someone with the reach and athleticism of Franco.
