Liberos and defenders can take over a match with even one play tilting the momentum in the complete opposite direction. Setters find a way to take over a game by calling their own number or just by creating one on one matchups for their hitters to terminate. Here are some players who can just take over a game without looking back.
Ashlynn Kuhn – Six Pack 16-1 (IA) – Middle Blocker – Class of 2021 (Title Photo)
What Ashlynn Kuhn did against FC Elite in the third set at Northern Lights was something special. This match was back and forth the whole way between the Badger Region Champions in FC Elite and the Iowa Region Champions in Six Pack. Momentum seemed to be slightly in favor of FC Elite until Ashlynn Kuhn and Jazmine Yamilkoski took over the match. Kuhn was making the shots and Yamilkoski knew the hot hand to feed. Everyone on that court knew who the ball was going to and there was no stopping her. Hitting it off the block, deep into the corner, and above all just powering through. The 6’0 middle blocker from Hudson is going to be one to watch progress with her speed and fast arm swing, plus she has an “X-Factor” that just gets it done.
Mckenna Wucherer – Milwaukee Sting 16-1 (WI) – Outside Hitter – Class of 2022
Committed to Minnesota
Wucherer is like a big point scorer in basketball where you might slow her down, but there is no stopping her. There are times where you’d think she may be down, but she’s never out. With the ability to put a hurt down the line, tool the block, or sharp cross there are multiple ways for her to score from the front or backrow.
Julia Bishop of Michigan Elite 16 MizunoJulia Bishop – Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno (MI) – Setter – Class of 2021
Bishop can do a lot of special things on the court. She is in complete control from the way she commands the offense, her presence at the net, and her overall leadership on the court. MiElite runs a fast tempo offense where Bishop has her hitters in the best spot to terminate. She is also extremely physical at the net whether its saving a set with one hand to a hitter or terminating a joust – you want the ball in her hands when it gets to crunch time.
Sam Naber – Sky High (IL) – Burlington High School (WI) – Libero – Class of 2021
Committed to Marquette
Naber burst onto the high school scene her Freshman year on Burlington’s state championship run, she followed that up with another state title her Sophomore year. With Naber, there is never a ball out of play. She will steal points from the other team with a big dig that was for sure to be a point for the other side – swinging the momentum back to her side of the net. This year Burlington High School will have one of the top backcourts in the state with 2021 elite defenders in Naber, Amanda Viel, and Mackenzie Leach.
Cianna Selbitschka – Kokoro 17-1 (MN) – Outside Hitter – Class of 2020
Committed to Minneosta-Duluth
Selbitschka is one of those who can terminate from any spot on the court and she welcomes the matches where she is putting up 40-50 swings. Last year in the Minnesota state tournament she led North Branch in three matches that all went five sets with nearly 30 kills a match. The physicality to produce three days in a row with that many swings is a feat in itself which ultimately ended in a state title for Selbitschka.
Karlie McNabb – Capital 17 Adidas – Outside Hitter – Class of 2020
Committed to Loyola-Chicago
McNabb can do some really special things on the court. She may not be the biggest on the pin, but she is touching ten feet on her approach and her athleticism is really tough to top. One of the best middle back defenders in Wisconsin, she can change the game offensively and defensively. Her celebration jumps are as high as her blocking, her energy is absolutely contagious for others on her side of the court.
Other Big Time Takeovers
Kennedi Orr – Northern Lights 18-1 (MN) – Setter – Class of 2021
Committed to Nebraska
Hard to put in the words what Orr is able to do for a team. Whether she needs to set or swing, she knows how to win at all levels (which includes internationally), and still has two high school years left to play at Eagan where they lost to Champlin Park in the state title match last season.
Brooke Mosher – FC Elite 18 Navy (WI) – Setter – Class of 2021
Committed to Illinois
Mosher played up two years on the FC Elite 18 Navy squad that competed in the 18 Open division at USAV this past weekend. When it comes to the high school season, Mosher is a triple double machine who will have double digit kills, assists, and digs.
Hayden Kubik – CIS 15M – Outside Hitter – Class of 2022
Kubik helped lead CIS to a runner-up finish at Triple Crown this winter and will be one of the top 2022 prospects to come out of Iowa who is so dominant on the net and can score points from any rotation.
Macy Daufeldt of Iowa RocketsMacy Daufeldt – Iowa Rockets 15R – Outside Hitter – Class of 2022
Daufeldt’s athleticism is tough stop because she can make something out of nothing. She just has a knack for finding a way to get it done. One of the best athletes in all of Iowa in the Class of 2022.
Sydney Dennis – Eastern Iowa Xtreme 17 Teal – Libero – Class of 2021
Committed To Iowa
Dennis takes away points from the other side with having a ridiculous ability to read the opposing attackers. She’s quick, she’s got the fire, and she has been playing at a really high level on the EIX 17 Teal squad that is full of Division 1 talent.
