What Goes Into a Ranking?
A rankings update…It’s here! We have been keeping tabs on the athletes from Iowa for almost a year now and we’re starting with the Class of 2019 rankings with the plan to release the Class of 2020, Class of 2021, and a Class of 2022 Watchlist every couple of days with content to follow.
What Goes Into a Ranking?
Here are a lot of questions I get when it comes to ranking players:
How do you organize all the athletes?
Do you rank them on where they are at or where you think they are going to be?
Do people pay you to rank them higher? (I’ve gotten that question and the answer is absolutely NO.)
When it comes to ranking players, it becomes a team effort. There are volleyball minds throughout the state I will get a lot of information from that includes college coaches, club coaches, and high school coaches. This goes on top of the massive spreadsheet of players that I’ve gotten notes from events that I’ve attended and seen live which we place a huge value on. Here are a few of the events I’ve attended where I’ve seen plenty of Iowa athletes live, which doesn’t include the events of those I confer with have attended as well:
Iowa Girls State Tournament
Prep Dig Top 250 – Nebraska
January Thaw – Omaha, NE
JVA Jamboree – Milwaukee, WI
Asics Presidents Day – Omaha, NE
Triple Crown Invite – Kansas City
Windy City Power League – Chicagoland
The Showcase – Wisconsin Dells
Iowa Regionals – Des Moines
From the notes app on my phone, to a Google Doc, to the Google Spreadsheet, to players being highlighted in green when I see them live, to rankings being sent to others with input from all parts of the state – point being, I want to make sure for those who are subscribing and using these rankings that putting these names out there are not taken lightly. Are there players we have probably missed? There will always be those hidden gems that we are always continuing to find at Prep Dig. Growing up in a small high school in Northern Iowa, I guess I know what it’s like to be the underdog, and being able to share a small town story is always exciting.
We will continue to evaluate and take great pride in providing hyper local coverage and attending events throughout the year.
Looking for a great way to prepare your team for Nationals or end your season on a high note? Look no further than the Prep Dig Gauntlet!
