There are also some changes and names that will be coming into 3A as well as names that will be leaving which could make things a little bit more interesting come postseason.
From the IGHSAU website in regards to enrollment:
“Volleyball – five classes with the largest 40 schools competing in 5A, the next 48 competing in 4A, the next 54 competing in 3A, the next 96 in 2A and the remaining schools in 1A.”

Gilbert will be the 88th school in regards to enrollment sending them to Class 4A and who is at 89 with three less students than Gilbert? Bishop Heelan out of Sioux City, they would be the largest 3A school. Center Point-Urbana which always has a strong class would move up to Class 4A instead of 3A like they were in 2018.
Based on enrollment classifications, school number 142 would be the smallest 3A, Carroll-Kuemper would be number 142, the defending state champions, nearly being sent down to 2A. Two Class 3A state tournament teams will now being playing 2A (again this is based on enrollment numbers for the 2019-2020 school year). Osage, who has been to three straight state tournaments will be in 2A as well as Clarion Goldfield-Dows who lost to Kuemper in the opening round.
So who are the favorites in Class 3A?
Mount Vernon – The Mustangs are always going to be in the conversation as a contender for a state title. They will return a talented soon to be Junior class that includes attackers Natalie Welch, Camryn Ellyson, and Madi Cranston. There will also be two solid setting choices in Summer Brand and Mazie Ruber. One major addition that will be added to the roster is Lauren Schrock, one of the top players out of the Class of 2021 who has already committed to Iowa. Schrock player her first two years at Solon.

MOC-Floyd Valley – In 2018, the Dutch dropped their first round in the state tournament to Mount Vernon, but will be returning a big arm in outside hitter Jazlin De Haan. De Haan has had a strong club season playing for MVP out of Sioux City. She will be joined by Taryn Nothem and Karli Bomgaars as the top attackers while also returning their top defender in Kieran Groendyke who had 264 digs in 2018.
Sommer Daniel was the Class 3A Player of the Year who will be a Senior next season.Davenport Assumption – The Knights got a taste of the state tournament last season, but will be back for more with the return of Kylie Welch and Emma Schubert on the pin, however they will have to replace their starting setter and libero. There are plenty in line to step in and show the state what they can do. One athlete may be Ava Schubert, a Class of 2023 left handed right side who is a six rotation pin that can score points and defend as well. Ava has been playing with her sister Emma on the Iowa Select 16 Mizuno team that has qualified for Nationals along with Assumption High athletes Annabelle Costello and Annabel Quijas.
2018 Player of the Year, Sommer Daniel of Tipton will be finishing her Senior year before heading off to play college volleyball at Utah. Daniel can set, swing, defend, do it all. Tipton was the Class 3A runner up, but will have to replace some big parts to their lineup with some big time athletes like Amanda Smith, the setter who will be playing at Central and Jamie Kofron who will throw shotput and discus at Iowa.
Kara Peter, the Drake recruit, will be back for Carroll-Kuemper along with Anna Nienhaus where together they had close to 600 kills. The Knights will also return their libero in Mallory Badding who had 538 digs in 2018.
