Continue ReadingMeet Ella Caffery, a young, capable setter from Moscow, Iowa. At 5’10” she is only a freshman with a lot of experience and even more time to improve. Most recently, as a member of the Iowa Rockets 15-1 that earned a bid in April at the Windy City Qualifier. And while you may already know some of her family members, Ella is making a name for herself.
Her club team is has been very successful. At the Windy city qualifier they went into playoffs with a 6-0 record (American division.) In fact, the team has only finished below 3rd place once all season. This team allows her to demonstrate why she would make a great college setter. Of course, it always helps having capable hitters like Morgan Etscheidt and Katy Stephens.
Her specialties include:quicks in the middle, a strong serve, consistent placement on the outside sets and her back sets. Watching her highlight tapes on NCSA isn’t the same as seeing her throw a set back behind her from the middle of the court. Back-setting has become such an essential part of college volleyball and to see such a young player with such precise back-set is exciting. It helps to really utilize all hitters and gives a variety for their big middle hitters. Not only that, but her back-set is very hard to read.
Ella runs a well distributed offense that is more complex than other 15’s teams. Her discipline has impressed many already. She’s been recognized by PrepDig.com being named on our watch list. Caffery and her team are not done yet, with schedule stretching well into June. You can see her in action in Iowa on June 23rd for the Rocket’s Pre-National Scrimmage. And that will be the last time before Ella takes her team and skills to the American Nationals in Indiana.
