Some of these athletes jumped in hot and humid conditions while others jumped in quite the downpour. In Iowa all seasons can be held in one weekend. Here are some of the top performances in the jumping events by athletes who have seen success on the volleyball court and the track.
Layanna Green celebrates after clearing a jump at the Iowa State Track Meet.Class 4A High Jump
Two top athletes in Class 4A squared off in high jump in Layanna Green of Waukee/CIS and Sara Hoskins of Pleasant Valley/Iowa Select. Both athletes cleared 5’6 with all misses at 5’7, however Green cleared 5’6 with no misses where Hoskins had one making Green the state champion. When it comes to the volleyball court, both of these athletes have range and athleticism. However, they play two completely different positions. Green is a middle blocker where Hoskins is a DS/libero.
Kylee Sallee – Hudson/CIA
Sallee came in as the favorite to win the Class 1A long jump, but being the favorite and coming out on top are two different things. Sallee delivered, with a jump of 17’11, the next closest jump was 17’4. Sallee will be a Junior outside hitter at Hudson. She also plays on the same club team as Saari Kuehl who placed in the high jump.
Aliyah Carter – Dubuque Wahlert/Eastern Iowa Xtreme
Carter had a Class 3A title to defend. She did that and then some with a Class 3A state long jump record. This was all in the Friday morning down pour in Des Moines. Carter jumped 18’8 where the previous record was 18’2 set in 2007.
Macy Daufeldt – West Liberty/Iowa Rockets
First state meet, no problem. Daufeldt came into the Class 2A meet with a strong jump, but was not a heavy favorite. After a jump of 15’9 her second jump of the day, Daufeldt busted a 17’7.75 which would ultimately be the winning jump, besting the rest of the field by over six inches.
Other Notables
Kyah Luhring – Grundy Center/CIA – 3rd in Class 1A Long Jump
Luhring had a long jump of over 17 feet and competed in three other events for Grundy Center this weekend. The libero from Grundy Center/CIA recently committed to Northwest Missouri State for volleyball and track.
Jaedynn Evans – Iowa City Regina/Eastern Iowa Xtreme – 2nd in Class 2A High Jump
In Class 2A, there was a six way tie for first place with a jump of 5’4. How does a six way tie work? The previous jump cleared and how many misses with resulted in Evans finishing second. She will be heading to Iowa this fall to play volleyball.
Chloe Largent – Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center/CIS – 9th in Class 2A High Jump
Largent is just a Freshman and will be one of the top athletes out of the Class of 2022 to keep tabs on as a top volleyball player and now a big time competitor at state track. Largent finished 9th with a jump of 5’2. She had the top jump of any 9th grader in Class 2A.
Saari Kuehl – Gladbrook-Reinbeck/CIA – 4th in Class 1A High Jump
Kuehl has not competed in track since she was in junior high. The 6’0 outside hitter from GR led her high school team to a state tournament in volleyball and finished fourth in the Class 1A high jump with a jump of 5’2. She will be one of the top kill leaders in Class 1A returning this fall for her Junior season.
Kenzie Mantz – Belle Plaine/Eastern Iowa Xtreme – 5th Class 1A Long Jump
Mantz completed a very decorated high school career as a volleyball and track athlete. With a jump of 5’0, Mantz finished 5th and competed in hurdles events as well. She will head to Iowa State to play volleyball.
