Continue ReadingAfter the 17s year of club, things seems like things change a little bit with some athletes not playing club their season year, a different schedule for the 18s year, so for some this may be their last time going to play at AAU Nationals – there could be that extra sense of urgency there to really make an impact and build some momentum heading into their Senior year of high school. Here are a few notes on top performances from the Class of 2020 heading into the final day of bracket play Monday.
Hailey Grocholski – Milwaukee Sting 17 Black – Middle Blocker
Grocholski came up in a big way in this afternoon’s last match against 17U Karson out of Florida. With match point for Karson, it was Grocholski taking a step over reading the other powerful middle blocker and sending the ball back with a block before either of them were able to land on the court. The momentum swung completely in favor of Sting as they went on to finish off the match to win 17-15.
Madelyn Mason – Capital 17 Adidas – Right Side
Mason is not committed, but after this week and seeing her multiple matches, she definitely is on the rise in the Class of 2020. A right side attacker whose approach jump is at 9’9 and a solid block on the right side, she is a flat out gamechanger. Most teams are geared up for Malik and McNabb on the left side, but having another weapon on the right side really changes the look for those taking on Capital. Mason is the real deal and will be a Senior at Mount Horeb. She will be quite the block combo with Elise Goetzinger, a Kentucky commit who will also be a Senior at Mount Horeb.
Sarah Mattes – MVP 17 Blue – Middle Blocker
Mattes has always been on the radar, been a strong player, but today I saw her turn it up another gear for MVP. Down against Sting 17 White, Mattes was connecting well with Nicole Pozorski hitting shots to the deep corner and sharp angles. She has played in multiple state tournaments for Greendale and will be a big time player this fall.
Emily Banitt – Kokoro 17-1 – Outside Hitter
Banitt and her other River Falls teammates play their club out of the Twin Cities. Right now Kokoro is in the championship bracket of 17 Open and Banitt has been one of the big pin hitters behind that success. The connection from high school setter and club teammate, Maddi Kealy, is clicking and when Banitt can hit the sharp cross court shot there is no defending it.
Rylee Vaughn – Sting 17 Black – DS/Libero
Vaughn is coming off an injury for Sting 17 Black and is providing one of the missing pieces for this squad to get to the next level. A big time gamer who is so strong in crunch time, Vaughn is able to bring stability to the backrow to serve receive on a dime and take pace off a hard drive ball. Vaughn and fellow teammate Sidney Paulson recently committed to Winona State right before the start of nationals.
