The 1W varsity summer league is three weeks in and concluded pool play last week. Teams will go into a tournament bracket this Monday. The twelve teams participating in the summer league include Algoma, Crivitz, De Pere (Varsity and JV 1), Green Bay East, Green Bay Preble, Oconto, Pulaski, Seymour, Southern Door, and West De Pere (Varsity and JV 1).
The top competitors in this league so far have ben Southern Door (8-1), West De Pere Varsity (8-1) and De Pere Varsity (6-3). Southern Door and De Pere came in as topped ranked teams and have held their rank throughout the league. West De Pere has come onto the playing field in this league.
De Pere will be a team to watch this year. They have a deep bench and are gritty. Brianna Guerts (Class of 2021, Prep Dig Rank #39) is a dynamic middle who will be a key player on De Pere’s team this year. She is fast and is an impactful hitter across the net. Another key player for this De Pere team will be incoming senior Kaitlyn Coisman (Class of 2020, Prep Dig Rank #75) who has a controlled yet extremely powerful swing. She is another dynamic hitter who will find the court no matter where she is.
Southern Door has definitely made a name for themselves during this summer league. Outside hitter Kendra Dantoin (Class of 2020, Prep Dig Rank #107) is a true all-around athlete who is solid on both offense and defense. Jaclyn Atkins (Class of 2020) has a powerful serve and is a natural leader on the court. Class of 2021 setter Nicole Norton should have an outstanding season in 2019. Her athletic ability and the way she sees the court will be a huge asset to Southern Door this year.
West De Pere is also 8-1 in the league. Some of their key athletes include senior pin hitter Elle Zimmerman and fellow senior setter, Cambria Budinger.
The league playoffs will happen this coming Monday and it should be a night filled with competitive volleyball. Each team in this league brings a lot to the table and should have a great night of play. This league is a great addition to the many leagues playing throughout the state that are proving this upcoming season will be highly competitive and fun to watch.
