With the high school season a little over a month away, this is a great time to start building some excitement for the season. This isn’t only for the team, but for the community. Here are some examples of highly effective ways to use social media in the high school volleyball world.
Get The Youth Involved!
In order to build a program, a youth program is a must. The current athletes in the program can serve as coaches and future athletes not only get a chance to dabble in volleyball, but have a great time and have some positive role models to look up to. Maybe later in the season those athletes who were at the camp can comeback and be a ball girl or stand with the team for the national anthem, get them accustomed to the bright lights and the varsity court, those are where dreams start. Plus by the time they get up to high school those pictures from camp when they were in 4th grade work as great #TBT moments.
Theme and Service Nights
Some high school student sections are really organized. Very impressive with camo night, neon, and various other themes they like to dress up as. Beyond the nights where the student sections dress up the same, there are nights where the community can be heavily involved whether it is a fundraiser for the school, a specific cause, or an appreciation. This is a great chance to get new fans in the stands. Once they “Like” the page they can continue to be fans far beyond the one game they attend and will hopefully be a regular all season.
Motivation and Shoutouts For Athletes
A motivational quote, video of workouts, or sharing a newspaper or even Prep Dig article is a great way to give some credit to players. There are plenty of social media accounts where I see them supporting other programs within the school and sharing pictures of their athletes doing great things in other activities. Once again, a great way to show off the positives of the program and the athletes involved.
Keep Connected With Alumni
Being involved in activities is all about making connections. For some athletes, volleyball is their passion and if they have committed to the program they way to stay connected once they have graduated. Some will be fortunate enough to play college volleyball, and from your team account you can follow their progress and share their successes as well.
But….I’m not good at social media, I don’t have time to manage it, etc. etc. etc. – No Problem
This doesn’t all have to be on the head coach. There are plenty of things going through the mind of a head coach and Facebook doesn’t have to be one of them. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can have multiple users and the admin to the account can change who is in charge of posting. Have an assistant coach manage the account and even have a “Captain of Marketing”. These athletes could have a job in social media and marketing someday so why not give them a chance to work with social media for a much bigger purpose.
*Athletes – Many are cautious about what they post, but just remember people can see what is liked on Twitter and Instagram.
