Millard South finished play in the championship division with a 17-1 set record in nine matches, dropping only a set to Sidney in a 25-19, 20-25 split with the Raiders. A couple things added to how impressive the Millard South show was. First is the fact that only one team – Kearney Catholic – was able to score 20 points in both sets against the Patriots. In the 18 total sets in the championship portion, Millard South surrendered only 20 or more points in a set five times.
Secondly, the Patriots’ top weapon on the outside – sophomore Maddie MacTaggart – was at an individual camp out of state and did not participate in Kearney.
Norris, one of the top contenders in Class B this fall, finished second with a record of 14-4. Millard South swept Norris 25-19, 28-26 in a very competitive match and the Titans’ only other two set losses came against Kearney Catholic and Grand Island Central Catholic.
Kearney Catholic edged out Sidney for third place as both teams finished with a 12-6 record, but Kearney Catholic had the tie-breaker based on head-to-head points as the two teams split their match with Sidney winning a set 25-19, but Kearney Catholic winning its set by more at 25-13.
Grand Island CC started off very slow the first day of the camp and entered the championship competition with a 1-7 mark, but looked much more like the Crusaders we’ve come to expect over the last – well – four decades or so. Grand Island rebounded with a 9-1 record on the second day and finished fifth overall at 10-8.
